Changemaker Campus event: Communities and the Big Society ...

Published Thursday 28th February 2013

As part of the Changemaker Campus launch, the University of Northampton will be hosting two public lectures on the subject of communities and the big society.

Featuring Professor Margaret Ledwith as guest speaker, the lectures will give students and members of the local community a chance to hear about radical community development and change.

Professor Margaret Ledwith is Emeritus Professor of Community Development and Social Justice at the University of Cumbria.??She has worked with communities in Scotland and in North West England , and spent time in Nicaragua, in inner-city Manchester, in Hattersley (a Manchester peripheral estate), and with Vietnamese refugees. These experiences have sharpened her understanding of power and oppression. Professor Ledwith's commitment to a more fair, just and equal world gives authenticity to her ideas on social justice and environmental sustainability , and she is a prolific author; she is currently writing Community Development in Action, a handbook for busy grassroots practitioners.

The first lecture, 'Reclaiming the radical agenda: Paulo Freire in a double dip downturn' takes place between 6-8pm on 5 March in the Dialogue Cafe, situated in Park Library. This event is open to both community practitioners within the local area and students from the School of Health. As a Dialogue Cafe event, our international partners will also be able to take part in the event.

The second lecture is entitled 'Community development and human flourishing: be the change!'. This event is open to students from the School of Health, and will take place between 9am - 11am on 6 March at Sunley Conference Centre.

Tampa area man swallowed by sinkhole

BRANDON, Fla. (AP) ? A man was missing early Friday after a large sinkhole opened under the bedroom of a house near Tampa and his brother says the man screamed for help before he disappeared.

The 36-year-old man's brother told rescue crews he heard a loud crash around 11 p.m. Thursday, then heard his brother screaming for help.

"When he got there, there was no bedroom left," Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokeswoman Jessica Damico said. "There was no furniture. All he saw was a piece of the mattress sticking up."

The brother called 911 and frantically tried to help his brother. An arriving deputy pulled the brother from the still-collapsing house.

There's been no contact with the man since then and neighbors on both sides of the Brandon home have been evacuated.

"We put engineering equipment into the sinkhole and didn't see anything compatible with life," Damico said. But Damico would not say that the man is presumed dead.

Damico said that at the surface, she estimates the sinkhole is about 30 feet across but officials say the sinkhole spreads to about 100 feet across below the surface. Authorities were waiting for an engineering crew to bring monitoring equipment to determine the borders of the sinkhole, she said.

"The entire house is on the sinkhole," Damico said.

Sky broadcasts Barcelona Grand Prix testing in 3D, we go take a look

Image

Geeks who are into fast cars and stereoscopic displays must think that watching F1 races in 3D is the bees-knees. However, FIA, the sport's governing body, has often been resistant to new technology -- only adopting HD a few years ago. That's why when the FIA asked Sky to produce a test-broadcast of the practice testing laps in the run up to the Barcelona Grand Prix, the British broadcaster jumped at the chance. Naturally, BSkyB wanted to show off its technical marvel, and so invited us to come and see what it was like. Of course, like the good geeks that we are, our attention was focused on keeping Sky's chief engineer Chris Johns in a corner and needling him with questions. Curious to find out what he said (apart from "please go away," of course)? After the break is where all the cool kids are at.

Iran steps up arrests, torture, executions: U.N.

GENEVA (Reuters) - Iran has stepped up executions of prisoners including juveniles as well as arrests of dissidents who are often tortured in jail, sometimes to death, the United Nations reported on Thursday.

In twin reports issued in Geneva, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the U.N. special investigator on human rights in Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, voiced concern at what they called an apparent rise in the frequency and gravity of abuses in Iran.

"The Secretary-General remains deeply troubled by reports of increasing numbers of executions, including of juvenile offenders and in public; continuing amputations and flogging; arbitrary arrest and detention; unfair trials, torture and ill-treatment; and severe restrictions targeting media professionals, human rights defenders, lawyers and opposition activities, as well as religious minorities," Ban reported.

The Islamic Republic, which is under economic sanctions for its disputed nuclear program, has failed to investigate "widespread, systemic and systematic violations of human rights", Shaheed's report said.

He called for the "immediate and unconditional release" of detained human rights advocates, journalists and lawyers.

Shaheed said opposition leaders Mehdi Karoubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi, who are under house arrest, are among hundreds of political prisoners held for exercising their right to freedom of expression during protests over alleged fraud in the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009.

The next presidential election is set for June.

Dozens of journalists, bloggers and activists have been arrested in the past few months, Shaheed said. Lawyers defending such figures had been targeted, including Abdolfatah Soltani who was arrested in 2011 and is now serving a 13-year sentence.

In a case that stirred international outrage, blogger Sattar Beheshti was arrested last October after receiving death threats and died some days later in prison.

Iranian authorities have arrested seven people suspected of involvement in his death and a judiciary official said a forensic examination had found bruises on the blogger's body.

Shaheed said: "An informed source communicated that Mr. Beheshti was tortured for the purpose of retrieving his Facebook user name and password, that he was repeatedly threatened with death during his interrogation and that he was beaten in the face and torso with a baton."

Torture by blunt instruments, including truncheons, and rapes and electric shocks have been reported in Iran, he added.

JUVENILE EXECUTIONS

Iranian authorities should stop imposing the death penalty on juveniles, banned under international law, both reports said.

Shaheed voiced alarm at the escalating rate of executions in Iran and the use of capital punishment for offences that do not meet international standards for the most serious crimes.

"This includes alcohol consumption, adultery and drug-trafficking," he said.

Without referring to the two reports, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Mahdi Akhondzadeh told the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva on Thursday: "Iran's commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights remains steadfast ... There are ample evidences which indicate my country's commitment in civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights."

Shaheed, a former foreign minister of the Maldives, has not been allowed to visit Iran. His latest report is based on 169 interviews with people inside and outside the Islamic Republic.

Some 297 executions were announced by the Tehran government last year, but the true number was closer to 500, he said.

Drug-related crimes account for 80 percent of executions and smugglers are denied the right to appeal against the death penalty, Ban said.

"There has been a dramatic spike in public executions in Iran," he said. Most took place at dawn in front of crowds.

Real Racing 3 hits the Play Store with new freemium model

Real Racing 3

The much-awaited release of Real Racing 3 from EA has finally come, and it's sticking with the freemium model that has received much attention leading up to the release. The game certainly looks fantastic from a graphical standpoint, and the gameplay seems to be top notch like previous editions in the series as well. What's keeping people cautious is the new freemium model, which lets anyone play for free but will require in-app purchases to get in-game actions like car repairs finished faster. There's a store to buy in-game currency at different rates, or you can buy "Packs" at a discount that have different unlocks bundled together. It's certainly interesting, but probably won't appeal to those who would prefer to have a single purchase up-front to unlock everything.

The game is just a small download from the Play Store, but you should have some battery and a stable network connection available when you launch it to download all of the additional content. Even with no game saves, the entire package is weighing in at about 1.2GB.

Behind the scenes of 'Top Chef: Seattle' finale

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Kristen Kish made winning the "Top Chef: Seattle" finale look easy.

In reality, preparing her five-course meal on the fly as the Bravo cooking competition's judges and a crowd of diners spectated from the sidelines was a non-stop endeavor requiring several hours of preparation ? and some phony silverware.

The 28-year-old chef de cuisine at Boston restaurant Stir was crowned champion of the 10th season Wednesday and took home the $125,000 grand prize after facing off against Brooke Williamson, the 34-year-old co-executive chef of Los Angeles restaurants Hudson House and The Tripel.

Kish's winning menu consisted of chicken liver mousse, citrus and lavender cured scallop, bone marrow and red snapper with leeks, Little Gem lettuce, tarragon, uni and shellfish nage.

"At the end of the day, my cooking is not super complicated," Kish said after winning. "My goal for this menu was just to do simple, good, elegant food with precision and excellence, taking simple things like chicken liver mousse, bone marrow or a piece of fish and executing them well."

Here's a taste from behind the scenes of Kish's win at the "Top Chef" finale filmed earlier this month:

? Kish and Williamson's finale battle played out in less than an hour on TV, but it actually lasted more like eight hours. The chef'testants each had a set amount of time to prepare each course, and an audio snafu delayed production by an hour. However, the clock ? and the cooking ? never stopped during the ongoing "Iron Chef"-like showdown. Even when Kish and Williamson faced critiques from the judges, their sous chefs were behind them readying the next courses.

? The portions for diners were much smaller than those the judges devoured, and most of the crowd wasn't able to taste both finalists' dishes. Also, despite the presence of each winner from the previous nine seasons, they didn't have a say on who would join their ranks. ("That was more intimidating than anything," Kish later said. "It was kind of comforting because they knew what we were going through, but it was very intimidating because they can be some of the harshest critics.")

? While the massive kitchen stadium erected inside a Van Nuys soundstage was impressive, the dining experience itself was more like a picnic. That's mostly because eaters had to taste the finalists' dishes with plastic flatware. "Top Chef" executive producer Dave Serwatka said they often use silver-toned plasticware instead of the real thing during filming because it doesn't make clanging and scratching noises that can be picked up by microphones.

? Kish was selected as the winner before the final course, but she still managed to serve her dessert: a lemony olive oil cake.
