iPhone 5 rumor rollup for the week ending Oct. 21

News

By John Cox

October 22, 2011 01:39 PM ET

Network World - For the iOSsphere, it's like the iPhone 4S never happened. The fever of speculation around the Next Apple iPhone rises and ebbs like a great tide, ever restless.

This week: questioning Apple's supremacy, LTE or Die, the rise in iPhone 5 Facebook scams, and why Apple turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to the strong call from the faithful for NFC.

You read it here second.

"So, it's probably not unreasonable to expect the iPhone 5 to be a 'complete redesign,' as the source said--meaning both externally and internally, though probably less so internally when compared with pronounced user-facing changes like the display size."~ Brooke Crothers, CNET.com

iPhone 5 better have LTEor else!

It was a headline sure to iGnite iPhanatics's iRe: "TeliaSonera exec questions Apple's supremacy."

The exec in question is Tommy Ljunggren, senior vice president and head of system development for mobility services at TeliaSonera, that famous, big, important mobile carrierin Sweden. And boy did he question it, in an interview at Telecoms.com.

"If you asked me two years ago I would have said Apple would be very important," he said. "But now it will be a bad mistake not to include LTE in the iPhone 5 as otherwise they will really be run over by the others."

Ljunggren went on to say, according to Telecoms, that:

* competitors are quickly catching up with Apple* the company's supremacy in the handset space is coming into question* "They are not unique enough and there is disappointment over the 4S it was too small a step for them."

That did not sit well with 9to5Mac's Christian Zibreg. "Ljunggren, of course, is confused and here's why," Zibreg said. But Zibreg doesn't actually explain why. He just lays out numbers that show Apple's success to date in the smartphone and tablet market worldwide. Of course it's had considerable success. Apparently the idea is that Apple is Too Successful to Fail. An idea which many people had until recently said about companies like, say, Nokia and RIM.

TeliaSonera isn't exactly in the forefront of LTE deployment. Ljunggren admitted the carrier doesn't currently support any LTE smartphones. TeliaSonera is waiting for "true LTE smartphonesnot the ones that the US has right now with two radios." That sounds like he's questioning U.S. supremacy insomething.

The fake U.S. LTE smartphones "drain the batteries flat very quickly as they have one LTE terminal for data and a CDMA voice terminal. It's basically a dongle and phone that they glue together. They work just not for long!" That's pretty good point, and Zibreg is spot-on to note that it's a point Apple has been making for months: waiting for silicon that's highly integrated, and power efficient, because it's all about the User Experience.

French hostage taken from Kenya to Somalia dies (AP)

PARIS ? A cancer-stricken and quadriplegic Frenchwoman who was kidnapped off an island resort in northern Kenya and taken to Somalia early this month appears to have died, French officials said Wednesday.

Unspecified "contacts" told French officials that Marie Dedieu, 66, had died but that the date and circumstances of her death were not immediately clear, France's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The kidnappers "probably refused to give her the medication we sent her," the ministry said. The Kenyan government has blamed the attack on Somali militants from the al-Shabab group.

After a weekly Cabinet meeting with President Nicolas Sarkozy, Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said Dedieu's death "isn't totally confirmed but is more than probable."

"Madame Dedieu was a gravely ill 66-year-old woman, afflicted with cancer (and) quadriplegic," he said. "Seizing a woman in this state is an act of barbarity and absolutely unspeakable violence."

French officials demanded that her remains be handed over.

Dedieu was captured from an island resort near the northern Kenyan town of Lamu on Oct. 1.

"Oh my God, she was my friend," said Lamu resident Beatrice Halua, after being told of Dedieu's death. "Sometimes I would cross (the water) to give her a massage ? she had bad circulation in her legs ? and she would give me advice on life."

"She knew how to live with everyone: good people, bad people. She was a nice person ? she had so many friends," she added. "Please, they have to just send back her body now. We need to see her for the last time."

Peter Gitau, a neighbor on the island Dedieu lived on, said he had feared Dedieu would die while in captivity.

"I knew she would die because of the situation she is in. Every four or five hours she was taking medicine," he said.

Philippines apologizes to China over sea accident (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? An official says the Philippine navy has apologized to China for accidentally ramming one of its fishing boats near the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.

Defense Department spokesman Zosimo Paredes said Wednesday the navy has informed the Chinese Embassy of the incident and apologized for it.

He said a navy ship on Tuesday spotted a Chinese fishing vessel encroaching on Philippine waters near Reed Bank, which the Philippines claims is within its waters. The vessel was towing about 35 smaller boats.

When the navy ship went to investigate, a problem with its steering mechanism caused it to become entangled with one of the smaller boats.

The Chinese vessel then left, abandoning the smaller boats. Paredes says no one was hurt and that there was little damage.

The keys for kitschy Carhenge are for sale

Alliance Chamber of Commerce

Carhenge is for sale. Friends of Carhenge, the nonprofit group that operates the attraction outside Alliance, Neb., can no longer afford to keep it running.

By Harriet Baskas, msnbc.com contributor

Carhenge, a classic and kitschy tourist attraction just outside of Alliance, Neb., is up for sale and could be yours for a mere $300,000.

Created 24 years ago by Jim Reinders during a family reunion, Carhenge is a sculpture made of 38 gray-spray-painted vintage American cars replicating Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England. Some of the cars stand upright, while others are welded in place to form arches.

?It?s astronomical what Carhenge means to our community, said Dixie Nelson, executive director of the Alliance Chamber of Commerce. ?More than 87,000 people visit it each year. The people in Omaha said they wished they had it, even though they already have so many attractions there.?

Not long after he built it, Reinders gave Carhenge, and the?10 acres of farmland it sits on, to the nonprofit Friends of Carhenge, a group that has maintained the site and improved it over the years with a building, a parking lot and additional sculptures.

But Marcia Buck, president of Friends of Carhenge,?says the group no longer has the money or the staffing to do Carhenge justice. ?We do what we do and we do it every summer, but we recognize there?s more that can be done out there. Putting in an RV park or a restaurant or expanding the building, for example, would take a lot of cash that we just don?t have.?

Buck said she?s talked with Reinders, who now lives in Arizona and visits Alliance and the sculpture about once year. ?He?s always surprised it?s lasted this long,? said Buck. ?And he understands.?

Clarification: Activision-Skylanders story (AP)

NEW YORK ? In a story Oct. 16, The Associated Press reported that a new game from Activision Blizzard Inc. uses some of the company's "Guitar Hero" technology. The game uses technology similar to what "Guitar Hero" uses to connect to video game consoles, but this is not proprietary "Guitar Hero" technology.
