Teacher morale a concern for filling jobs

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Charlotte - Mecklenburg school (CMS) superintendent, Dr. Heath Morrison, says teacher morale is a concern for him this year.

"I want to make sure our teachers feel like the heroes and she'roes," Morrison said. "That they are. We got to get people to see teaching as an iconic profession."

So far CMS has about 92 teacher vacancies.? Human Resources is concerned with filling those spots. NC lawmakers approving no raises for teachers is making it difficult for teachers to come to the Tarheel state to work.

"It can be frustrating," CMS Human Resources Director Terri Cockerham said.? "We can't compete with other states and we are hearing that from numerous candidates."

The district also says teachers are leaving CMS for better paying teaching jobs.

"We have seen an increase in resignations," Cockerham said. "Since about the middle of July compared to last year."

Morrison says he will look for other ways besides money to help boost teacher morale.

"I am always going to visit classrooms," Morrison said. "To have town hall meetings especially those focused on our employees so teachers can feel like they have access to the superintendent."

Kindergarten teacher Ginger Godbold believes first year teachers will have a challenge receiving no pay raise.

"The young teacher who doesn't have a second income at home," Godbold said. "Just out of school with college loans - those are the ones taking a hit."
