(AP) ? Two theater chains have canceled showings of the "Electric Daisy Carnival Experience" documentary after violence erupted outside the premiere of the film in Hollywood earlier this week.

The Los Angeles Times reports Friday that Regal and AMC theaters cited "the incident in Los Angeles" in their decision not to show the film about the Electric Daisy Carnival rave.

Police in riot gear were called in Wednesday night after some fans became unruly, throwing bottles and damaging three police cruisers. Three were arrested and police say more are expected after identifications are made from video.

Insomniac Events, which promotes the Electric Daisy Carnival, said Friday the film will still be shown in hundreds of theaters nationwide and is disappointed that Regal and AMC canceled their showings based on a few troublemakers.

Do Language and Music Mimic Nature?

Features | Mind & Brain

In a new book, neuroscientist and author Mark Changizi explores how language and music separate us from our primate ancestors

man speaking into a megaphoneIs language universal?: Why did humans develop complex spoken languages--and even more complex musical tendencies? Evolutionary neuroscientist Mark Changizi examines those questions and others in his new book. Image: iStockphoto/lisegagne

Editor's Note: The following is an excerpt from the first chapter of the new book Harnessed: How Language and Music Mimicked Nature and Transformed Ape to Man, by Mark Changizi. Copyright (c) 2011 by Mark Changizi.

If one of our last nonspeaking ancestors were found frozen in a glacier and revived, we imagine that he would find our world jarringly alien. His brain was built for nature, not for the freak-of-nature modern landscape we humans inhabit. The concrete, the cars, the clothes, the constant jabbering?it's enough to make a hominid jump into the nearest freezer and hope to be reawakened after the apocalypse.

But would modernity really seem so frightening to our guest? Although cities and savannas would appear to have little in common, might there actually be deep similarities? Could civilization have retained vestiges of nature, easing our ancestor's transition? And if so, why should it?why would civilization care about being a hospitable host to the freshly thawed really-really-great-uncle?

The answer is that, although we were born into civilization rather than melted into it, from an evolutionary point of view we're an uncivilized beast dropped into cultured society. We prefer nature as much as the next hominid, in the sense that our brains work best when their computationally sophisticated mechanisms can be applied as evolution intended. Living in modern civilization is not what our bodies and brains were selected to be good at.

Perhaps, then, civilization shaped itself for us, not for thawed-out time travelers. Perhaps civilization possesses signature features of nature in order to squeeze every drop of evolution's genius out of our brains for use in the modern world. Perhaps we're hospitable to our ancestor because we have been hospitable to ourselves.

Does civilization mimic nature? I believe so. And I won't merely suggest that civilization mimics nature by, for example, planting trees along the boulevards. Rather, I will make the case that some of the most fundamental pillars of humanity are thoroughly infused with signs of the ancestral world?and that, without this infusion of nature, the pillars would crumble, leaving us as very smart hominids (or "apes," as I say at times), but something considerably less than the humans we take ourselves to be today.

In particular, those fundamental pillars of humankind are (spoken) language and music. Language is at the heart of what makes us apes so special, and music is one of the principal examples of our uniquely human artistic side.

As you will see, the fact that speech and music sound like other aspects of the natural world is crucial to the story about how we apes got language and music. Speech and music culturally evolved over time to be simulacra of nature. Now that's a deep, ancient secret, one that has remained hidden despite language and music being right in front of our eyes and ears, and being obsessively studied by generations of scientists. And like any great secret code, it has great power?it is so powerful it turned clever apes into Earth-conquering humans. By mimicking nature, language and music could be effortlessly absorbed by our ancient brains, which did not evolve to process language and music. In this way, culture figured out how to trick nonlinguistic, nonmusical ape brains into becoming master communicators and music connoisseurs.

One consequence of this secret is that the brain of the long-lost, illiterate, and unmusical ancestor we unthaw is no different in its fundamental design from yours or mine. Our thawed ancestor might do just fine here, because our language and music would harness his brain as well. Rather than jumping into a freezer, our long-lost relative might instead choose to enter engineering school and invent the next-generation refrigerator.

The origins of language and music may be attributable, not to brains having evolved language and music instincts, but rather to language and music having culturally evolved brain instincts. Language and music shaped themselves over many thousands of years to be tailored to our brains, and because our brains were cut for nature, language and music mimicked nature?and transformed ape to man.

House delays vote on debt limit, spending cuts (AP)

WASHINGTON ? House Republican leaders have abruptly delayed a vote on a bill extending the government's debt limit and cutting federal spending.

House Speaker John Boehner's spokesman, Michael Steel, said it was "a sensible assumption" that Boehner was still trying to round up the needed votes. Steel said the vote would still happen Thursday night.

The House was nearing the end of its debate on the legislation when Republicans suddenly shifted gears. They instead moved to a bill renaming a post office in Peoria, Ill.

GOP leaders have been laboring to line up the 216 votes the debt bill would need to pass the House, and they have encountered opposition from some conservatives. There are 240 Republicans in the House.

Few if any Democrats are expected to support the measure.

Turkey military command quits in row with government: report (AFP)

ANKARA (AFP) ? Turkey's army chief-of-staff and the entire military command have resigned in a row with the government over promotions for generals held in an alleged anti-government plot, media reported Friday.

General Isik Kosaner stepped down after several meetings in recent days with Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, ahead of an early August meeting of the army's high command which decides on promotions for senior officers.

As well as Kosaner, the commanders of the army, air force and navy also quit, NTV and CNN-Turk reported, which is unprecedented in Turkey, a NATO member.

The authorities are holding 42 officers, including several generals, as part of an investigation into an alleged plot to overthrow the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the moderate offshoot of a banned Islamist movement.

Several of those held are already retired.

But senior officers in the army had been trying to get some of the serving officers promoted, despite their incarceration.

The government insisted that they be forced to retire.

Now members of the high command who stepped down Friday have themselves asked for early retirement, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The dramatic mass resignation has particular resonance in Turkey, which endured military coups followed by periods of repression in 1960, 1971 and 1980.

In 1997, an army-led campaign forced the resignation of the country's first Islamist-led government.

The AKP has been in power since 2002.

Chavez celebrates 57th birthday, proposes summit (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez celebrated his 57th birthday Thursday vowing to survive cancer and proposing to host a summit of Latin American leaders in December.

Chavez said he expects his hair will begin to fall out soon due to chemotherapy but that he should be finished with the bulk of his cancer treatments by December.

"At the end of the year, I should have passed this hard, careful, very, very strict phase," Chavez said in a telephone interview on state television.

He said he sent letters inviting Latin American and Caribbean leaders to the summit in Caracas on Dec. 9. That meeting had originally been scheduled for July 5 and 6 but was postponed due to Chavez's illness.

A group of children sang birthday songs for Chavez on television and blew out a candle on a cake in his honor.

Chavez said that for now he needs to limit his contact with the public because chemotherapy has weakened him and lowered his natural immune defenses. But he also said he planned to address supporters from a balcony of the presidential palace Thursday.

"I'm going to be here in private with my inner team," Chavez said. "But of course, I'm going to the balcony."

He said he was sorry he couldn't attend Thursday's inauguration of Peruvian President Ollanta Humala, and that he sent his foreign minister in his place.

"I sent a hug to Ollanta," said Chavez, who also offered a congratulatory message to the Peruvian leader through his Twitter account.

Chavez underwent surgery in Cuba on June 20 to remove a cancerous tumor. He hasn't said what type of cancer he has been diagnosed with or specified where exactly it was located, saying only that it was in his pelvic region.

He underwent his first phase of chemotherapy in Cuba last week, saying the aim was to make sure no malignant cells reappear.

The president said he was preparing to begin a second phase of chemotherapy.

"But putting all those things aside, I'm happy," he said. Chavez called his 57th birthday "sublime."

"And I invite you to the 67th," he said.

Use Student Loans To Finance Your College Dreams

The job market today is more competitive than it has ever been. In the past, you could sometimes work yourself into a good paying job without a degree, but it is much more difficult to do that these days. The problem is that college is also expensive. There are not a lot of people who get through four or more years of college without ending up with a few student loans. The good thing is that a federal direct student loan gives people access to college who may not have been able to afford it. You are probably eligible to apply for a student loan for every year that you to go school, but you will have to get a new one for each semester. Each of these loans is separate.

The great part about using a student loan is that you do not have to start making payments on the loan until after you graduate. In fact, in most cases you do not have to start the repayment process until six months after you graduate. This grace period also applies if you decide to leave school before you obtain a degree. The thought behind this grace period is that it gives you enough time to get out of school, find your first job and get settled into your new post-college life.

In most cases, there are hardship clauses in case something happens to your ability to pay back the loan. Under certain circumstances, the repayment process can be delayed. However, you have to make sure that you get this approved before you stop making payments on your loans. One reason that your repayments could be delayed is if you decide to go back to school. If you become a full-time student after you initially left and started making payments, your future payments would again be delayed until you are out of school again.

There are also different types of student loans that can be taken out by people other than the student who is attending college. You parents or grandparents may decide to take out their own loan to keep you from being saddled with loans when you finish school. They will obtain the same low interest rate that you would have as long as the loan is used for your education. If you are like most people, you will probably end up with several different loans that you have to keep track of. However, you will have the option when you get out of college to consolidate these loans.

If you really want to go to college and get education at a higher level, but cannot afford it, a student loan may be an option for you. It allows you to get help to fund your college education, does not make you make payments on the loan until after you graduate and gives you the lowest interest rate you will probably ever get on a loan. Before you give up on your dreams of a college degree, make sure you look into all the options you have to get student loans.

REVIEW: Crave the Moon by Lori Handeland - Dear Author

Dear Ms. Handeland,

I will admit to having lost touch with your Nightcreatures series. Silly me thought that you?d switched over to your Phoenix Chronicles and hadn?t been checking your website lately. Seems like I?ve missed not just one but two books in the process. Well, I?m back in the saddle with ?Crave the Moon.?

Crave The Moon by Lori Handeland Gina O?Neill has been trying to hang onto the Colorado ranch she inherited when her parents died trying to save her and her childhood friend Jase from a cave in that happened at a site on the ranch which has always been said to be cursed. Sometimes Gina would swear that she hears someone or something calling her name on the wind and still feels drawn back to the location of the accident. It?s a photo she takes of a bizarre tree in the area which leads Dr. Matteo Mecate, an archeologist trying to prove his deceased mother?s ridiculed Aztec theories to be true, to write Gina asking for permission to dig at the site. When he gets no response from her after repeated attempts to contact her, Matt heads to Colorado and, on the spur of the moment, passes himself off as another client at the dude ranch while he tries to discover the location where he thinks an Aztec superwarrior might have been buried centuries ago.

There is instant chemistry between Matt and Gina which of course gets ruined when Gina finds out Matt has been lying to her about who he is and why he?s there. It goes from bad to worse after independently wealthy Matt buys the ranch from the slimeball who bought Gina?s mortgage from the bank. Then things get worser still when the eons old creature buried and contained all those years ago finally gets out. Will anyone survive long enough to fall in love or is the world doomed if Gina and Matt can?t come up with a way to save the day?

I love that Matt is sort of geeky and has to have glasses or everything?s a blur ? wow can I relate to that. He?s not media reference savvy but he?s got a hot bod. He?s also got that professorial habit of drifting off in his mind as he contemplates great things. Gina is nice, direct, no nonsense ? what I?d expect a woman raised on a working western ranch to be. She leaves the flirty girly stuff to others. Gina does some token resistance of the feelings she has for Matt and he manages a half hearted effort but they?re pretty much like magnet and steel ? maybe not quite a fated mate romance but darn close. I guess with all the other paranormal stuff to fit into the book this is the only way to do it. But do they have to do the ?inappropriately timed fucky fucky? not just once but twice?! I?m thinking ? werewolves all around, knowledge that the Nahual ?master of all Aztec evil? can strike anywhere and these two cloud their mental ?here and now? with bedsport? Time and Place people!

After ten books you?ve still maintained an inventive use of historical fact mixed with local legends and myths -this time Aztecs x Utes ? plus a heaping dollop of imagination. Some parts of the basis of this book seem real ? such as the willing Aztec sacrifice getting a year of goodies, while the trip north of the Aztecs to war against the Utes for sacrificial warriors is stretching it. But it is fun to read about and shows you put some time into at least trying to come up with something that sounds pseudo realistic. And then as the Nahual says to Matt ? prove that this is wrong. Since in RL we are guessing/unsure about so much of Aztec life ? anything could go. I love the way that Gina actually saves Matt when she fights the Nahual ?

Show ?

it combines something of her fleeting thoughts as a human but much more of what she would feel as a werewolf ? the Nahual is messing with the human she wants and by damn no one is going to take her prey.

This is a paranormal and I know I should just let go and free fall into it but some things still bother me. I agree with Gina that two sorcerers are one too many. Then there?s the part about certain people having a damn good idea of the extent of the evil locked up in this little corner of Colorado and not much being done beyond spreading rumors of something evil there to try and keep people away. Then things really go downhill as the voodoo priestess gets involved. And are they just going to leave the Nahual like he was before? They know that doesn?t always work. Plus I have some unanswered questions ? why did the Nahual bite Amberleigh and not get everyone else too? If horses are spooked by werewolves, why didn?t they bolt from the barn the first night? Also how much longer is Edward Mandenauer going to still be around. The guy must be pushing the upper 80s by now. But he?s still got his network of minions and seemingly endless supply of weapons and cool stuff to use in the battle against monsters. I want minions!

Like a newly turned werewolf craving human blood, I find I?m still helpless to resist these books. Weak! I?m weak I tell you. The title might be ?Crave the Moon? but I crave the Nightcreatures. B-

Analysis: In debt row, hints of emerging-economy crises (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Debt default. A ratings downgrade. Political deadlock. Such terms, once associated primarily with the developing world, now abound in the mighty United States.

As the U.S. Congress flirts with the once-unthinkable prospect of not paying the country's bills, the heated battle over a usually routine vote to lift the country's debt ceiling is dealing another blow to America's image.

The global financial crisis, which was rooted in poor regulation of the U.S. housing and banking sectors, already tarnished perceptions of the United States overseas.

For political economy experts who have spent their careers focused on the emerging world, Washington's protracted debt stand-off is all too reminiscent of the divisions more typical of developing-country politics.

"We attend a lot of meetings with Latin Americans and we used to complain to them about the problems they had, and now they like to say to us: 'That sounds just like the U.S.'," said Peter Hakim, head of the Inter-American Dialogue, a policy group in Washington.

"What's really shocking is the inability to reach agreement. All of a sudden the U.S. is a democracy that is unable to find a compromise. We're polarized."

That sort of polarization is common in the developing world. The United States was often a critic of institutional disarray in places such as Brazil, where a multitude of parties makes it difficult to enact legislation, or Mexico, where the opposite problem -- long-standing one-party rule -- stifled political choice.

Yet the stalemate now facing the U.S. two-party system demonstrates the challenges of the divided government Americans voted for last November.

Given that the United States is home to not only the world's largest economy but also its most liquid and safe debt market, the repercussions of a U.S. financial meltdown are potentially much larger than a more contained emerging-markets crisis.

British Business Secretary Vince Cable told BBC television on Sunday that "right-wing nutters" in the U.S. Congress were holding up a deal to prevent a catastrophic default, posing a greater threat to the global financial system than the euro zone, which has been grappling with a debt crisis of its own.

Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez, whose own country defaulted on about $100 billion in debt a decade ago, asked last week: "When did the American dream become a nightmare?"

When advising the United States on how to deal with the budget crisis, ratings agency Moody's last week suggested the country eliminate the debt ceiling to prevent repeats of the kind of uncertainty now gripping financial markets.

Instead it suggested following the example of Chile, where increases in debt are constrained but not technically limited.

Fast-growing countries in Latin America, including Chile and Brazil, achieved a more sustained growth path in part due to reforms aimed at reducing their debt loads and reining in budget deficits.

COURTING A DOWNGRADE

The push from Republican leaders for sharp cuts in U.S. government spending, which many economists say would hurt a fragile recovery, has made the rating agencies a driving force for policy. They had come under fire for giving top-notch grades to shoddy real estate securities, contributing to the financial meltdown of 2007-08.

Ratings agencies played a central role in the emerging-market debt crises in Russia, Asia and Latin America in the late 1990s. Back then they were also criticized as too late to downgrade countries with questionable credit records.

If the United States is downgraded, interest rates could rise, risking a new recession. Some Wall Street economists say the recovery is already being hampered as the threat of a debt default deals a further blow to consumer confidence.

Another damaging consequence of the debt limit scuffle has been to shift the discussion away from doing more to bring down a 9.2 percent jobless rate to a debate over spending cuts that will most likely put a damper on economic growth.

Investors, who long brushed off the prospect of an outright default as highly unlikely, are increasingly concerned and shocked that the politicians in Washington have allowed the crisis to get this far.

"The extent of political dysfunctionality will stun many, especially at a time when America needs unity and common purpose in D.C. to also address high unemployment and other challenges," said Mohamed El-Erian, co-chief investment officer of the mega bond fund PIMCO, who writes columns for Reuters.

Haag Sherman, managing partner at Salient Partners, an investment firm in Houston, Texas, said the angry tone of U.S. politics harked back to the early days of the Republic, when the United States really was a developing nation.

"We were an emerging market then, and you have some of the hallmarks of an emerging economy today: increasing concentration of wealth, an entrenchment of the political class," he said.

Winehouse among music talents gone too soon (AP)

NEW YORK ? Amy Winehouse released only two albums in her life, one of which sold more than a million copies, won five Grammys and sparked a retro soul movement that hasn't yet stopped.

The small output, in inverse relation to her outsized talent, made her death Saturday in London all the more tragic. Fans will only be able to imagine the unrecorded singles, the never-to-be concerts and the comeback album that didn't come.

It's a sadly familiar script in pop music, the history of which is checkered with greats and would-be greats snuffed out too early in life.

Almost as soon as news of Winehouse's death broke and spread across social media, fans were inducting her into the unfortunate pantheon of music talents gone too soon. Many noted that Winehouse, 27, shared the same age at death as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison.

The British singer-songwriter Billy Bragg, though, realized that a meaningful commonality was being mistaken for coincidence.

"It's not age that Hendrix, Jones, Joplin, Morrison, Cobain & Amy have in common," wrote Bragg on Twitter. "It's drug abuse, sadly."

Those names were touted on the Web as the 27 Club, a ghoulish glamourizing of rock star death that makes it sound as though even in death VIPs remain behind a seductive velvet rope.

It's a term, sometimes called the Forever 27 Club, that has spawned a Wikipedia entry, an independent 2008 movie ("The 27 Club"), numerous websites and at least one book ("The 27s: The Greatest Myth of Rock & Roll").

The causes of death vary. Jones, the Rolling Stones guitarist, was found dead at the bottom of his swimming pool in 1969 and was ruled dead "by misadventure." Hendrix, having mixed sleeping pills and wine, died in 1970 in a London hotel room. Joplin, also in 1970, died in her Porsche in Los Angeles, with heroin suspected as the culprit. Morrison died of heart failure in 1971 in the bathtub of his Paris apartment. Cobain killed himself in 1994.

Some have claimed Cobain was aware of the so-called 27 Club. After his death, his mother, Wendy O'Connor, was understandably fed up with the concept, saying: "I told him not to join that stupid club."

The cause of Winehouse's death is not yet known. She long struggled with drug and alcohol abuse. Last month, she canceled her European comeback tour after she swayed and slurred her way through barely recognizable songs in her first show in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. She flew home, and her management said she would take time off to recover.

What's particular about Winehouse's style of rock 'n' roll excess is that it was chronicled thoroughly by the tabloids and news media and was eagerly consumed by readers.

High-quality photographs captured her poor health, the scabs on her face and marks on her arms. Videos of her landed on the Internet, like one that showed her and Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty playing with newborn mice. Another showed her singing a racist ditty to the tune of a children's song. One, published by a tabloid newspaper, appeared to show her smoking crack cocaine.

Her run-ins with the law ? she was cautioned by the police in 2008 for assault and in 2010 pleaded guilty to assaulting a theater manager who asked her to leave a family Christmas show because she'd had too much to drink ? found headlines. So did her romances, such as her brief marriage in 2007 to music industry hanger-on Blake Fielder-Civil.

Rarely, though, were Winehouse's troubles romantic or appealing. Though a thoroughly captivating presence ? all beehive and tattoos and candor ? Winehouse always cut a desperate figure. Her struggles with substances and bipolar disorder (she said she declined to take medication for it) were painfully evident.

In death, her famous boast of "no, no, no" to rehab only sounds empty. The hard truths of addiction don't fit neatly into pop tunes ? or morbid 27 Clubs ? but play out over years of toil.

Early death typically mythologizes pop stars, inflating their reputation. Pop culture writer Chuck Klosterman, in his book "Killing Yourself to Live," wondered why "the greatest career move any musician can make is to stop breathing."

The posthumous releases from Winehouse will surely follow, and her legacy will grow. But hopefully mythologizing will be resisted.

Winehouse's death, an unfortunate but unsurprising end to a long, public decline, might be best remembered not just as another tragic loss but as a modern portrait of how untrue those rock myths really are.

What's right and wrong with Christian fiction? ? Careann's Musings

.

Does anyone really know what constitutes good Christian fiction? Four years ago I was invited to do several book reviews for our national church magazine, The Presbyterian Record. The books ranged from historical fiction to children?s fiction, and I chose to consolidate the reviews in one article, incorporating the reactions of fictitious readers.

Those reactions reflected conversations I?d had with people whose experiences with Christian fiction were frequently negative. They told me plots were too often superficial, with stilted characters, unrealistic conflicts and predictable conclusions. ?Any romance reminded them of a television commercial where the closest lovers got to each other was running through a field of wildflowers, arms outstretched for an embrace. I have to admit their opinions mirrored my own, based on what I?d read twenty years ago.

But things are changing. After reading the designated books for the review, I realized many written in the twenty-first century were more satisfying than I expected. There were still shortcomings, but that?s just as true in books written for the secular market.

Although CBA guidelines have relaxed a little, allowing for more true-to-life plots, and authors are writing grittier Christian fiction in ever-expanding genres, criticism of it still exists. In their blog posts yesterday authors Katie Ganshert and Jennifer Hale both discussed the question of why.

Jennifer suggested it may be in how we deal with the conversion scene. She said, ?I really don?t enjoy books where the character ?gets saved? and everyone lives happily ever after.? That?s not realistic. And nine times out of ten, I skip reading the ?conversion scene? in a novel.? Why?? Several reasons.? But mostly because there is no cheesier part of the book than the conversion scene. It?s a very difficult scene to get right.?

Katie asked, when dissatisfaction with Christian fiction is expressed, ?[is it] Christianity in general that bothers these readers, or the way the Christian themes are handled??

I?m not sure the answer can be reduced to a generalization, but I?m interested in your opinion. If you don?t read Christian fiction, why not? And if you do read it, what genre do you prefer? What do you especially like or dislike about many of the stories?

~

I hope you?ll join me here on Monday for an interview with
YA author Dave Ebright.
