Unwanted cell phones being collected to help U.S. troops

A local effort is under way to convert old, unwanted cell phone into phone cards that can be used by members of the military serving abroad.

The national ?Cell Phones for Soldiers? program is being coordinated locally by Joyce Handa of the Poway Kiwanis Club. Boxes have been placed at several public locations where the phones will be collected and shipped to the program?s headquarters, where each phone will be exchanged for a 120-minute calling card. Those cards will be distributed to U.S. troops for calls back home.

Collection boxes have been placed at the Hamburger Factory, Poway High School, Twin Peaks Middle School, Painted Rock Elementary and Village Mail & More (intersection of Rancho Bernardo and Pomerado roads).

Canon LV-7297M

The Canon LV-7297M data projector is a step up in brightness from the Canon LV-7292M that I recently reviewed but is otherwise very similar, providing a basic feature set, adequate data and fairly good video image quality, in a portable data projector. It's a reasonable choice for use in classrooms or small conference rooms.

The LCD-based LV-7297M is rated at 2,600 lumens, a little low by today's standards (3,000 is more typical), but higher than the LV-7292M's rating of 2,200 lumens. As perception of brightness is measured logarithmically, the apparent difference in brightness is even less than the ratings would indicate. (It takes a lot more than doubling the rated brightness for a projector to appear twice as bright.) As is the case with the Canon LV-7292M, the LV-7297M's 500:1 contrast ratio is unusually low for a projector these days.

The silver-and-gray LV-7297M measures 3.9 by 13.0 by 9.6 inches and weighs 6.5 pounds. That makes it reasonably portable, though it doesn't ship with a carrying case?Canon sells one for $60 direct. Behind the lens are the (reasonably responsive) focus wheel, and a zoom wheel with a 1.2x zoom.

The LV-7297M has a typical (if basic) selection of ports for a portable projector: VGA (which triples as a component video and S-video input); 3 RCA jacks for composite audio/video; HDMI, RS232; audio-out, and a microphone jack.

Testing
From about 8 feet away, the LV-7297M's image filled our 6-foot diameter test screen. As usual, I did most of our data and video testing under theater-dark conditions. With the addition of ambient light, some fine detail was washed out, though the image was still usable.

In testing using the DisplayMate test suite, data image quality was suitable for general business or classroom presentations, though not for situations in which exacting color is required. Text quality was good, readable (if a little fuzzy) at the two smallest sizes. In general, colors seemed reasonably true, but there was some tinting: white backgrounds had a slight yellowish tinge, and some grays had a touch of pale green. Another issue was fringing: some borders between very dark and very light zones, such as at the edge of a white image, appeared yellow or, on occasion, blue.

The tinting was worst in Presentation Mode; it was somewhat better in the Standard or High-Contrast color modes. Switching from VGA to an HDMI connection didn't resolve the issue; in addition, it made it harder to distinguish between similar very dark (or very light) shades. That said, if the tinting or fringing don't bother you or your audience, it's a perfectly good data projector.

Video quality is suitable for showing short to mid-length clips as part of a presentation. As an LCD-based projector, the LV-7297M is immune to the rainbow effect?little red-green-blue rainbow-like artifacts that can appear in high-contrast video scenes?that plagues many DLP projectors. I did notice modest fringing and tinting in places, and some backgrounds had a slightly textured look.

Audio from the LV-7297M's 1-watt built-in speaker was of relatively low volume, useful only in a small room or when one is very close to the projector; you may want to use external speakers with it.

The Canon LV-7297M is a decent, basic portable XGA data projector, though it brings nothing to make it stand out from the crowd. The Canon LV-7292M offers the same features but with lower brightness, at a lower price.

The Editors' Choice Epson PowerLite 93+ shares the LV-7297M's relatively low 2,600-lumen brightness rating, but provides top-notch data image quality and good video image quality, and a good sound system for less money. The NEC Display Solutions NP-V300X is brighter at 3,000 lumens and provides great data image quality, though its video quality is impacted by the rainbow effect.

Romney promises a better future, focus on jobs

TAMPA, Florida (Reuters) - Republican Mitt Romney will promise voters a better future on Thursday, urging them to set aside their disappointment in President Barack Obama and join him in rebuilding an economy that generates jobs and protects retirement security.

Taking center stage with his address to the Republican convention in Tampa, Florida, Romney vowed to be a champion for small business and restore a sense of innovation in America.

"To the majority of Americans who now believe that the future will not be better than the past, I can guarantee you this: if Barack Obama is re-elected, you will be right," Romney said in excerpts of his speech released by the campaign.

"I am running for president to help create a better future. A future where everyone who wants a job can find one. Where no senior fears for the security of their retirement," he said.

Romney's speech will be seen by a television audience numbering in the tens of millions, with some voters getting their first extended look at the former Massachusetts governor, who unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in 2008.

Romney said he will intensely focus on creating new jobs and ridiculed Obama's promises from the 2008 campaign.

"What is needed in our country today is not complicated or profound. It doesn't take a special government commission to tell us what America needs. What America needs is jobs. Lots of jobs," Romney will say.

"President Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family," he said.

In his speech, Romney, who can often come across as stiff, must inspire fellow Republicans, many of whom have shown little passion for him, and make the broader electorate feel more comfortable with him.

As portrayed by Democrats, Romney, 65, is alternately a heartless corporate raider, wealthy elitist, tax evader and policy flip-flopper who should not be trusted with the keys to the White House.

But in a "bounce" for Romney from the three-day convention in Tampa, Florida, the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll showed him moving into a narrow lead over Obama -- 44 percent to 42 percent among likely voters. The Republican candidate had entered the week trailing Obama by four percentage points.

Movie star Clint Eastwood will bring a touch of Hollywood glamour to the convention, appearing as a surprise last-minute speaker to warm up the crowd for Romney, a Republican official said. Romney's speech will start at around 10:15 p.m. (0215 GMT).

Ask A Realtor Spotlight: Beverly Hourlier | REALTOR.com? Blogs

Ask A Realtor Spotlight: Beverley Hourlier photo
The latest interview in our series spotlighting the Realtors who answer the questions in the Ask A Realtor section is Beverley Hourlier of San Diego, California. In 1996, Beverley (Powers) Hourlier became an assistant to Huffman Construction and Real Estate. That was her first taste of real estate sales. Mr. Huffman was so impressed by her eye for detail and her ability to connect with the public that he sponsored her Real Estate License. After Huffman closed, she joined Century 21 and learned all she could about real estate marketing and sales. She was recruited by a new company, Grub & Ellis Residential and fast became a noted agent in University City and Clairemont. Grub & Ellis was purchase by Coldwell Banker, where she became a trainer, mentor, Assistant Manager and finally Manager of the Clairemont Office where her husband, Phil joined her after he received his Real Estate License.

A few years after receiving her Broker?s License, Bev Hourlier opened her own Real Estate Office with Phil, servicing all of San Diego County. After just 2 years, they now have 7 agents, a Property Management Division, and pride themselves on superior customer satisfaction, expert marketing and negotiation. HC Realty Services has grown to become noted internet marketers, and experienced in the foreclosure and Short Sale market, helping many families each year avoid foreclosure and start a new life.

1) How has the market in the San Diego area changed in the past few years?
The market in San Diego has changed dramatically over the last 4 years due to the sub-prime loans and decreasing values. I started my career in the late 1990?s when it was also a down market with many foreclosures. Certainly nothing like today, but I still learned how to work in this type of market and how to deal with the depressed values, depressed and distressed homeowners. Realtors who started their career during our increasing market days had it easy. They didn?t have to learn marketing, advertising and internet strategies because properties sold quicker than you could put a sign in the yard. Today it takes more than just a sign or postcard. And I am thankful (not at the time) that I had to learn ?the hard way? because I knew what to do to get properties sold when the market turned down.

2) On your website you state that over 90% of your business is from referrals, what is your best tip for Realtors to get great referrals?
I believe referrals are the life of any business. To get and keep referrals you have to ask for them. I ask when I first meet a client who else they know that I can help buy or sell or help them through a difficult time by short selling. I ask again during the process and ask again at the end. Also staying in touch by remembering their birthday or some other reason a couple of times a month keep you in their thoughts.

3) What response have you had from your book on short selling?
My response on my book ?Should I Short Sale My Home? has been tremendous. I wrote it for homeowners to give them information so that they could make informed decisions during this difficult time. 75% of distressed homeowners who have been foreclosed on never asked for help, either from their lender or a professional such as a tax professional, lawyer or Realtor. Education is always key when making important real estate decisions.

4) Your philosophy on real estate is that it is more about customer service than sales, what does this mean to you when dealing with clients?
I believe customer service is a lost art. If you focus on helping your client to the best of your abilities and beyond their expectations, then the connections, referrals and transactions will follow. I treat my clients like family. I deal with their money as I would with mine, and I think about them first and their needs, not my paycheck.

5) You are an active volunteer within the community including helping with a yearly canned food drive, what do you feel a Realtor?s role is with regards to community service?
I believe a Realtor should be active in their community and give back. After all it is where we live, work and have our families, too! If you seriously care about your community, it will show and people will trust you to help them when they need advice about their home.

Joe Bonino, proud supporter of Prop H8 bigotry - The Humboldt Herald

Joe Bonino: proud supporter of Prop H8 bigotry and anti-gay constitutional amendments, from a 2/25/2004 Times-Standard article.

?While same-sex couples can enter into domestic partnerships, ?in California, marriage is defined as between a man and a?woman,? Bonino said. He said that was decided with the Republican-supported ballot initiative Proposition 22 in 2000.?Bonino said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, whose staff has performed thousands of gay marriages in the last 10?days, is ?just grandstanding.? Bonino said he favors a constitutional amendment to prevent further ongoing legal debates?and costs.?

From the ?propaganda of fear? to a way to ?expedite the whole debate,? many Humboldt County residents have strong?views to share on the recent developments in the gay marriage debate.?Margot Gallant of the Humboldt County Gay and?Lesbian Alliance had come to the Downtown Express coffee shop to discuss upcoming gay pride events with coffee shop?owner Karen Phillips on Tuesday ? the morning President George Bush announced he planned to seek a constitutional?amendment banning same-sex marriages.

?How can someone legislate and make me illegal?? Gallant asked.

Phillips said Bush?s announcement stems from an ongoing prejudice she called ?the propaganda of fear.?

?I went through my angst at being gay,? Phillips said. ?I?m over it, and they can get over it too.?

Locally, she said, most people have. Her business, near the Humboldt County Courthouse, attracts a diverse clientele?from bankers to attorneys to trial defendants ? nearly all of whom treat her with respect, she said.

Joe Bonino, vice chairman of the Humboldt County Republican Party, said he supports Bush?s proposed amendment.

While same-sex couples can enter into domestic partnerships, ?in California, marriage is defined as between a man and a?woman,? Bonino said. He said that was decided with the Republican-supported ballot initiative Proposition 22 in 2000.?Bonino said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, whose staff has performed thousands of gay marriages in the last 10?days, is ?just grandstanding.? Bonino said he favors a constitutional amendment to prevent further ongoing legal debates?and costs.

?I think it?s a good idea to expedite the whole debate,? Bonino said.

The Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee?s position on gay and lesbian relationships is to ?affirm their right?to equal legal recognition of their committed relationships? and their right to become adoptive parents, said committee?chairman Brian Mau. The party opposes constitutional amendments that would abridge such rights, but its platform does?not have language relating specifically to gay marriage, he said.

In recent years some local gay activists have staged a protest by coming into the county clerk/recorder?s office each?Valentine?s Day and trying to apply for a marriage license.

?I believe we had as many as 60 couples in line at one time,? said Clerk/Recorder Carolyn Crnich.

When the same-sex couples asked to apply for marriage licenses, she said, her staff responded that they could not do so?under California law but were welcome to pick up domestic partnership applications. The protest did not take place this?year.

Humboldt County residents Eric Rofes and Crispin Hollings were among the first couples to get married at San Francisco?City Hall on Valentine?s Day. They?ll travel to Boise this weekend for their honeymoon.

Rofes, assistant professor of education at Humboldt State University, said the wedding was intended as an act of civil?disobedience. The couple has been together for 15 years and had a commitment ceremony more than a decade ago.

?The spirit was upbeat and renegade and loving and exciting,? Rofes said. ?Cars were going by tooting their horns and?people were bringing flowers and donuts and wedding cake.?

Rofes said he sees the gay marriage debate as part of a larger debate ?about who gets to participate in the institutions of?our democracy ? is it just certain kinds of people or is it all people??

HSU government and politics lecturer Cary Frazee, a lawyer whose background is in civil rights law, said the proposed?amendment would deny gays and lesbians their civil rights.

?The purpose of the Constitution has always been to protect civil rights,? she said. ?Never has it been amended to take?rights away from a class of people.?

Frazee added that marriage has always been regulated by states rather than the federal government, and that Bush had?previously stated his support of state?s rights.

Montana wildfires burn homes, cause injuries

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) ? Firefighters struggled Thursday to gain control of major Montana wildfires that burned houses and caused injuries, even as crews rushed to tamp down new blazes before the flames spread.

The toll from the latest spate of fires remained uncertain. But at least three evacuation orders were in place and well over 150 homes were threatened by blazes that in some cases burned unchecked.

One new fire was reported south of Ashland, and two others erupted in Gallatin Canyon south of Bozeman. Authorities moved quickly to squelch them and said one of the Gallatin Canyon fires was extinguished by late afternoon.

High temperatures and erratic winds made the fight more difficult. And with nine large fires burning in Montana, officials said there was increasing competition for adequate equipment and personnel.

"We are making do with what we can get," said U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Karen Tuscano.

Tuscano was responding to a new wildfire in Paradise Valley near Yellowstone National Park. The blaze known as the Pine Creek Fire ignited Wednesday and resulted in minor injuries to firefighters and members of the public, the Park County sheriff's office said.

Residents caught unaware were forced to flee the village of Pine Creek without packing any bags, said Park County Commissioner Marty Malone. He said about 200 people live in the area and that some tried to fight the fire themselves, including a man who turned a hose on the flames until the power to an electric water pump was cut off by the blaze and the water stopped running.

At least five houses and several buildings were confirmed burned as the flames advanced to threaten houses in the Deep Creek area, Tuscano said.

The fire had grown to an estimated 8 square miles after starting on private land near the Yellowstone River. The cause was under investigation.

South of Butte, a resident who failed to heed an evacuation order was taken away by ambulance after suffering second-degree burns to his hands and arms, said Forest Service spokeswoman Mariah Leuschen.

That blaze, the 19 Mile Fire, has burned more than 6 square miles and at least nine structures, including two houses. Officials warned the toll will likely rise.

Residents briefly were allowed back in with escorts Thursday to check on the condition of their property. Officials planned additional escorts Friday morning when fire activity is at a minimum.

South of Bozeman, officials said six houses and 20 commercial buildings and outbuildings were threatened by the Millie Fire, which exploded from less than 1 square mile to more than 15 square miles from Wednesday to Thursday. The fire was uncontained Thursday.

Smoke and haze from the wildfires continued to degrade the air quality in southwestern Montana. The air in Hamilton and Bozeman was listed as unhealthy by state officials.

To the east, an estimated 20 residences and summer houses remained evacuated due to a fire burning on the northeast front of the Beartooth Mountains near Roscoe. But firefighters had a crude line around the fire by late Thursday and crews were being re-assigned to the Pine Creek Fire, said spokesman Jeff Gildehaus.

Wildfires were burning in at least six other western states. In California, the Goff Fire continued to threaten about 80 homes in northwest Siskiyou County, while the North Pass Fire in Mendocino County threatened 64 more residences. Both fires are about one-fourth contained.

And a blaze in Wyoming's Teton Wilderness has scorched 19 square miles after making a big run Wednesday. The fire spread away from an area with summer cabins, though, and fire officials said it may burn itself out soon.

The Perfect Project: Sprucing Up Your Home With These Tips | Iiccm

You don?t have to be naturally ?handy? to do your own home improvement. Your home will be nicer to live in and more valuable with a few well chosen home improvement projects. When these projects are done well, they can boost your property value. Read on to find out how to accomplish this for yourself.

TIP! Aluminum and roller shutters are a smart way to add security and value to a home. This is good in places that have a lot of hurricanes and/or strong winds.

When installing cabinets, lots of home builders keep construction costs down by installing just cabinets with no attached hardware. Thankfully, it?s possible to buy handles, drawer pulls, and cabinet knobs at a home improvement store or online. In less than an hour, you can put in accents ranging from vintage decor to modern styles.

Be mindful of your environment when doing home improvement, and only tackle upgrades that fit the overall picture. Things like adding a sun roof in Seattle would make nearly no sense. Stick with things that are popular, and do not veer from the neighborhood norm.

Use only high quality paints to paint your home?s exterior. The paint will last longer when you buy high-quality paint. Even though quality paint has a higher price tag, it will be more durable and it will cover the surface of your house more quickly and easily. It?s better to spend the extra money on higher quality paint so you don?t have to go back over it every few years if you get a lower quality one.

TIP! Consider bamboo as an option for hardwood floors. This type of flooring is extremely popular because of its durability.

Put ?no-shoes? rules in place to protect new carpets and flooring for years of enjoyment. Make storage accessible near the doors, and perhaps even provide slippers to guests and family. That prevents debris like dirt from going into your new carpet or marking up your new wood floors.

In any home improvement project involving brick, purchasing extra bricks is a very wise investment. When brick work needs to be repaired or added to, finding new bricks that match the original ones can be hard. The styles and color tones for bricks are updated frequently. Stocking up on extra bricks now can save you a lot of time and effort later.

TIP! Give your front walkway a lift! One unique idea is to get rid your walkway entirely and replace it with brick pavers. This job is simple, however be prepared for some strenuous labor.

A design philosophy that many people are using is the age-in-place design strategy. This is a design technique which takes the aging of residents into consideration. When you are making changes to a home you want to keep forever, or even one you hope to sell, additions that are age-in-place increase the safety, value and comfort of the house.

Choosing the right lights for each room usually makes a huge difference. Having a room that?s well-lit with plenty of light can give a warm and inviting feeling. Putting in an additional light fixture can really brighten up a room. Adding light to a previously dark space can improve the entire house.

TIP! Talk to a contractor if you?re having trouble deciding how to increase your home?s value. They are generally aware of which projects will best enhance the value of your home and can provide useful suggestions regarding what you should tackle.

People may consider installing radiant heating or a central vacuuming system in order to attract higher purchase offers from potential buyers. That said, they don?t invest in the needed repairs like exterior paint. Potential consumers will register these errors, thinking the house is a ?fixer-upper? and request a price that is much lower than the actual value. Remember that first impressions are very important when buyers look at your home.

Make sure the best parts of your home stand out. Don?t block any spectacular views or hide any elegant fixtures. If is always a great idea to highlight a home?s selling points. This will make your home seem more unique and desirable.

TIP! Select a color scheme that works best for your room. For formal areas in a home, consider using complementary color schemes, which work well in these types of spaces.

Try using wallpaper if you?re not a fan of paneling or painting. Hanging wallpaper is an inexpensive and simple way to change the look of any room in your home. Although, you should be wary of the type of wallpaper that you select since removing certain kinds are more difficult than others.

You can dress up pillows in any room which can be a simple project. Take some old clothes such as band shirts, shirts with cool designs or an old pair of jeans; cut them to size to fit your decorative pillows and sew them together. In this photo taken Dec. 15, 2010, Muslim religious leader Said Afandi speaks at a council of Dagestan's peoples assembly in the regional capital Makhachkala, in the Caspian Sea province of Dagestan, southern Russia. Officials in Russia's violence-plagued Dagestan say a top Muslim religious leader and five of his followers have been killed by a suicide bomber. A spokesman for the republic's police said the female bomber blew herself up at the home of Said Afandi in the village of Chirkei. Afandi was a leader of Sufi Muslims and had often publicly criticized the Wahhabi sect that is the core of the insurgency in the republic. (AP Photo/Sergei Rasulov/NewsTeam)

(AP) ? Russian police on Wednesday identified the female suicide bomber who killed an influential Muslim leader in a terrorist attack that could worsen a longstanding confrontation between radical Islamists and moderate Muslims in the volatile Caucasus region.

Said Afandi, 74, the powerful leader of a Sufi Muslim brotherhood in Russia's unstable province of Dagestan, was killed Tuesday along with six other people, including an 11-year-old boy, in the central village of Chirkei by the bomber, who approached his house disguised as a pilgrim. Afandi's tens of thousands of followers included influential officials, clerics and businessmen.

Police in Dagestan said Wednesday that the bomber was Aminat Kurbanova, a 30-year-old resident of Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala. The Interfax news agency claimed she was an ethnic Russian woman who had converted to Islam after marrying an Islamist militant.

Afandi's killing follows a string of attacks on moderate Muslim leaders in the Caucasus who have publicly denounced the spread of radical Islamic groups known as Salafis whose followers advocate an independent state, or emirate, that would include Caucasus and parts of southern Russia that contain a significant Muslim population.

Afandi had recently initiated peace talks between Sufis and Salafis.

Dagestan, a multiethnic and predominantly Muslim province of nearly 3 million people on the oil-rich Caspian Sea, is a focal point of the Islamic insurgency in the Caucasus, and shootings, bombings and police operations against rebels occur there almost daily. Human rights groups accuse security forces and police of fueling the insurgency through extrajudicial killings, abductions and other abuses.

The mystical Muslim orders of Sufis have for centuries been popular in Dagestan and neighboring Caucasus provinces, and their leaders and adherents survived decades of Communist persecution. The Sufi brotherhoods are fiercely opposed to radical and militant Salafis that have mushroomed across the region. The Sufis often pray over the tombs of revered saints, and Salafi puritans condemn worshipping over graves as idolatry.

Tens of thousands of people attended Afandi's funeral Tuesday, and thousands more flocked to his grave Wednesday to pray as Dagestan's secular authorities declared a day of mourning.

The killing of the white-bearded cleric, who appeared in public wearing a traditional hat made of astrakhan lamb fur, could lead to more violence in Dagestan and the Caucasus, experts say.

"These are attempts to abort peacekeeping efforts in the region and to escalate the situation in southern Russia," Ruslan Gereyev of the Center of Islamic Studies in Dagestan's provincial capital, Makhachkala, told the Kavkazsky Uzel online publication.

If the killing goes unpunished, the authority of Afandi's influential followers will be questioned, said Alexei Malashenko of the Carnegie Moscow center. "If the main figure is killed and his followers are silent, this will lead to a major reappraisal of values" in Dagestan, he told The Associated Press.

Female suicide bombers are often called "black widows" in Russia because many of them are the wives, or other relatives, of militants who have been killed by security forces. Some women are driven more by personal revenge for slain relatives than by promises of martyrdom and reward in the afterlife, while others are sent on such attacks against their will, experts say.

In April 2010, two women from Dagestan blew themselves up on Moscow's subway system, killing 40 people and wounding 121 during a morning rush hour.

At least two dozen female suicide bombers have carried out terrorist attacks on security officers and civilians in Russian cities and aboard trains and planes in the country since 2000.

Dagestan's provincial leader, Magomedsalam Magomedov, said Wednesday that civilian paramilitary squads should be created to prevent and repel attacks by radical Islamists.

Scrapping the Michigan Personal Property Tax (PPT) without guaranteeing replacement funds for local services and schools would harm public school students, counties, libraries and police and fire protection across the state, a coalition of mayors and county and school officials warned during a press conference in Lansing Sept. 8, 2011. In addition, eliminating the PPT without guaranteeing replacement funds for local purposes would severely limit the ability of local governments and school districts to issue bonds for future capital projects and jeopardize their payments on existing debt, the Replace Don?t Erase coalition cautioned at a news conference today. Because PPT revenues go to local governments and schools and may not be touched by the legislature and governor, the revenues are viewed as stable funding sources by banks that finance large municipal projects. The event was attended by members of the media as well as numerous Michigan mayors and public officials. Speakers were Tom Mullaney, president, Michigan Association of Counties, Alpena County Commissioner; Dan Gilmartin, executive director and CEO, Michigan Municipal League; Richard Notte, Mayor of Sterling Heights; Christine Berro, Director, Portage District Library and past president of the Michigan Library Association; Gretchen Couraud, Executive Director, Michigan Library Association; Dave Weisenberg of the Michigan Professional Fire Fighters Union; Howell Police Chief George Basar, Legislative Chairman and Past President, Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police; and Stan Kogut, Superintendent of Ingham Intermediate School District, member of the Michigan Association of School Administrators; Tim McGuire, executive director of the Michigan Association of Counties, Deena Bosworth, legislative coordinator for the Michigan Association of Counties and Summer Minnick, director of state affairs for the Michigan Municipal League. Ann Romney on using a TelePrompter: ?I don?t like it?

ON THE ROMNEY PLANE EN ROUTE TAMPA?Ann Romney said it's "exciting" her husband will be on hand to watch her speech Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention?though she admitted she's nervous about working with a Teleprompter for the first time.

Romney made a quick visit back to the press cabin of her husband's campaign plane as it flew to Florida to deliver a batch of "welsh cakes" she baked from her grandmother's recipe. Along the way, she offered a glimpse into preparations for her speech Tuesday, joking that her remarks have been reduced to merely "a tweet."

Asked about the theme of her speech, Romney said she hoped to communicate to voters "how important this election is going to be and how important it's going to be for them to consider the right things to make the right decisions."

[Slideshow: Ann Romney fashion]

Romney called the process of coming up with the speech a "unique experience" since she usually speaks off the cuff at her husband's campaign rallies. But Romney said she had "a lot of input" into what she will say Tuesday night.

"I think you will see that my speech is heartfelt, and I think a lot of you have been covering me long enough and you know that I've never gone off a written text so this is a unique experience for me to actually have something written? No one has ever written a speech for me," she said. "[There was] a lot of tweaking where I felt like I was getting what I really wanted to say from my heart."

Tuesday will be the first time Romney has ever used a TelePrompter?and she bluntly admitted, "I don't like it."

Romney said she was "excited" about the space and laughed about how nitpicky her husband and his campaign aides were being about details like what she'll wear Tuesday?adding that the "verdict is still out" on her clothing choice.

"The funniest thing of all is that Stuart Stevens who wears his shirts inside out is advising me on what dress I should wear tonight. So I know I've really come full circle now," Romney said of her husband's senior strategist. "Frankly, I didn't realize that Stuart had to weigh in on this--or my husband. It was going to be like my wedding night; I wasn't going to let him know what I was going to wear. But now they have opinions."

Israel court clears military in Rachel Corrie death

An Israeli court on Tuesday cleared the military of any responsibility for the death of US activist Rachel Corrie who was killed by an army bulldozer in 2003, rejecting a civil suit filed by the family.

The family said they were "deeply saddened and deeply troubled" by the verdict, with their lawyer vowing to press ahead with an appeal after a legal battle which has lasted nearly 30 months.

"I reached the conclusion that there was no negligence on the part of the bulldozer driver," said Judge Oded Gershon, reading out a summary of his verdict at Haifa District Court in northern Israel.

He said Corrie's death was the result of an accident, and that the 2003 military police investigation -- which found she had been killed by falling earth as a result of her own irresponsible behaviour -- had been properly conducted.

"The deceased put herself into a dangerous situation, she stood in front of a giant bulldozer in a place where the operator could not see her. She did not distance herself as a reasonable person would have done," he said.

"Her death is the result an accident she bought upon herself."

According to eyewitness accounts, the 23-year-old was killed by a military bulldozer in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip on March 16, 2003.

At the time, she was acting as a human shield with a group of pro-Palestinian activists from the International Solidarity Movement to prevent troops from demolishing a house.

The verdict echoed the findings of an internal investigation by the Israeli military which was concluded just four weeks after her death and cleared troops of any responsibility in the matter, saying the bulldozer crew could not see Corrie because she was behind a mound of rubble.

The Corries' lawyer Hussein Abu said the family would appeal to the Supreme Court.

"The verdict is based upon distorted facts and could have been written by the state's attorney," he told reporters as her father Craig stood by stony-faced, her mother Cindy looking heartbroken and close to tears, an AFP correspondent said.

Cindy Corrie said the family was "deeply saddened and deeply troubled" over the verdict.

"We believe that Rachel's death could and should have been avoided," said the white-haired American, her voice breaking with emotion. "We knew from the beginning that a civil suit would be an uphill battle."

Israel, she said, operated "a well-heeled system to protect the military."

"This was a bad day, not only for the family, but a bad day for human rights, for humanity, for the rule of law and for the country of Israel," she said.

Craig Corrie, a veteran of the Vietnam War, said it was clear from testimony of senior military officers that they believed troops could kill people in southern Gaza "with impunity."

"We've seen from the highest levels of the military that they thought they could kill people on that border with impunity," he said.

In March 2010, the family launched the civil action for negligence against the state of Israel and the defence ministry for a symbolic sum of $1, plus costs.

They had earlier tried to sue Caterpillar, the bulldozer's US manufacturers, for liability but the action failed.

In its 2003 ruling, the military said Corrie had been killed by falling earth and building materials as a result of her own negligence.

"The death of Ms. Corrie was not caused as a result of a direct action by the bulldozer or by its running her over, but by the falling of earth and building materials that was pushed by the bulldozer," it said at the time.

The army went on to accuse Corrie and other activists from the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) of "illegal and irresponsible behaviour" contributing to her death.

But activists who were with her at the time said she was visible to the driver.

According to an account published two days after her death by activist Tom Dale, who witnessed the incident from 10 metres away, Corrie was clearly visible.

"The bulldozer drove toward Rachel slowly, gathering earth in its scoop as it went. She knelt there, she did not move. The bulldozer reached her and she began to stand up, climbing onto the mound of earth. She appeared to be looking into the cockpit.

"They pushed Rachel, first beneath the scoop, then beneath the blade, then continued till her body was beneath the cockpit. They waited over her for a few seconds, before reversing. They reversed with the blade pressed down, so it scraped over her body a second time. Every second I believed they would stop but they never did."

Corrie was killed at the height of the second intifada, or uprising (2000-2005) and quickly became an symbol of foreign support for the Palestinian cause and the subject of a 2005 play based on her emails and diary.

TUM scientist to receive Reinhart Koselleck Project funding from DFG

Near-field thermoacoustics measurement is a totally new imaging technique that is likely to benefit medical practitioners and biology researchers. Thermoacoustic imaging works by exposing the tissue to harmless wide-band short-pulse transient electromagnetic radiation. The irradiated area heats up, causing tiny vibrations which can be recorded using ultrasound detectors. This results in high-contrast and ultra-high-resolution radiofrequency images of normal tissues, tumors and other pathological changes, even if the area of interest is embedded deep within tissue.

Now that he has been granted Reinhart Koselleck Project funding, Prof. Ntziachristos and his team at Technische Universitaet Muenchen will advance their research into the basics of near-field thermoacoustic measurements and imaging, and systematically document their findings. In particular, they will investigate how to optimize the impact of electromagnetic waves on tissue for imaging purposes. Another priority will be to develop a measurement and imaging method that doctors can use for mobile diagnostics and check-ups. "Near-field thermoacoustics is a very exciting new development in high-resolution diagnostic and theranostic imaging," says Prof. Vasilis Ntziachristos. "Thanks to the DFG funding, we can explore it in great depth over the next few years."

Grill Grrrl Recipe: Smoky Grilled Chicken Wings ? CBS Connecticut

smoked wings Grill Grrrl Recipe: Smoky Grilled Chicken Wings
Smoking can be quite addictive. Smoke adds a nice flavor element to chicken wings and it It only takes about 45 minutes of time on the grill to achieve serious smokiness. Pair the wings with your favorite BBQ Rub and Sauce and your tailgating buddies will be smacking their lips in satisfaction!

Smoky Grilled Chicken Wings Ingredients: (serves 4-6)

  • 2.5 lbs of chicken wings and drummettes
  • 3-4 tablespoons BBQ rub
  • 1/2 bottle BBQ Sauce (I prefer Stubbs or Drapers)
  • 2 tblsp olive oil
  • apple or cherry wood chips (or both) ? pre soak in water 30 minutes before putting on the grill

Directions:

  1. Preheat grill to medium high heat and prepare a direct and indirect heating zone.
  2. Rinse chicken wings and pat dry.
  3. Coat with olive oil and then add the BBQ rub.
  4. Add wood chips to your fire and let them begin to smoke. If using a charcoal grill, add the wood chips on top of the charcoal. If using a gas grill, create a ?smoking packet? by putting the wood chips in a foil pouch and poking a few holes in it so the smoke can escape.
  5. Put the wings/drummettes on the indirect heat side of the grill and let them smoke for approximately 30-40 minutes. Turn the chicken once during this process to cook/smoke evenly.
  6. Next, put the wings on direct heat and add sauce to both sides. Grill, on direct heat for an additional 10 minutes and let the wings develop nice char marks.
  7. Using an internal thermometer, check that the wings have reached an internal temp of 165 degrees.
  8. Tent the wings for 10 minutes before serving. Serve with additional BBQ sauce and make sure you have plenty of napkins on hand for your guests. Enjoy going back for seconds!

Google Reveals Prominent Legal Expert Among Paid Consultants

google-legal-lawAs you may recall the judge in the Oracle v. Google patent and copyright trial (William Alsup) asked both sides to reveal?authors, bloggers, journalists and others with whom they had financial relationships.?Oracle disclosed that it had retained?Florian?Mueller, who writes the widely read patent blog FOSS Patents. Google said that it had no such relationships.

The judge wasn?t?satisfied?with that response and ordered Google to try again and produce a list of paid commentators by August 24. At the end of last week, Google complied by filing a supplemental disclosure listing several names and non-profit organizations.

Here they are (see also Google?s filing at the bottom):

  • William Patry: current Google employee who had written an article on copyright years before the litigation was filed
  • Tim Bray: Google employee who commented on the litigation via Twitter
  • Bruce Perens: A consultant retained by Google for advice related to the Oracle suit. Google said he wrote about it prior to being retained by Google
  • James Gosling: A former Oracle employee hired by Google in 2011 (no longer there). He blogged about the suit prior to being hired by Google
  • Timothy B. Lee: A former Google intern who writes for blog Ars Technica and wrote about the litigation
  • Lauren Weinstein: A researcher who did some work on behalf of Google and commented on the case on Google+
  • Jonathan Band: An attorney and author of a book, Interfaces on Trial 2.0 (published before the Oracle trial), that advocates a Google-friendly point of view.

Google also disclosed several organizations to which it had contributed money or provided financial support:?Computer and Communications Industry Association, EFF, the Center?for Democracy and Technology and a couple of others.

As TheVerge earlier reported the most interesting disclosure is Stanford Law Professor Mark Lemley. Lemley is an intellectual property expert and has been widely quoted on patent and copyright matters including high-profile cases.

Most recently Lemley was quoted about the Apple v. Samsung verdict and its implications. However Lemley was also cited and quoted in at least three news items or articles related to the Google-Oracle litigation. Although Google says Lemley and his law firm ?serves as outside counsel to Google in unrelated cases,? his relationship to Google was not revealed in any of those stories.

As I quickly read those articles I found no explicit pro-Google bias (although it?s close in one case). While it?s a bit of a gray area, as an attorney Lemley probably should have disclosed and explained his relationship to Google. He probably would still have been quoted. However his retention by Google isn?t mentioned.

Often journalists are pressed for time and/or fail to ask experts about potential conflicts of interest. I?ve been quoted many times about the local and mobile markets and only once or twice been asked whether I had any relationship to the companies being discussed (I did not).

The US FTC requires bloggers to disclose if they?ve been given compensation or free products when they offer reviews or testimonials on behalf of those products. But the?disclosure?rules don?t otherwise extend to all paid relationships.

Journalists?receive training in matters of conflicts and ethics. Bloggers typically don?t have similar training and may not be aware of or sensitive to the hazards of?ethical?conflicts. On the opposite end, they may not care. Some bloggers/writers may explicitly be using their blogs, writing or social media posts to present a paid point of view.

Disclosure: I was a year ahead of Mark Lemley at UC Berkeley?s Boalt Hall School of Law.

Food Politics ? How much does obesity cost American society?

The costs of obesity are personal, but also societal.

Economists love trying to figure out how to quantify such things.

The most widely used estimate for the United States is from Cawley and Meyerhoefer?s 2012 article in the Journal of Health Economics: $190 billion annually for health care and lost productivity (their 2010 working paper may be easier to access at the National Bureau of Economic Research?site).

Now the Campaign to End Obesity has published its own analysis of these costs.

  • $44.7 billion, for inpatient services.
  • $45.2 billion, for non-inpatient services.
  • $69.3 billion, for pharmaceutical services.
  • $146.6 billion, across all services.

As the Campaign puts it:

the total economic cost of overweight and obesity in the United States and Canada caused by medical costs, excess mortality and disability is approximately $300 billion per year. The portion of this total due to overweight is approximately $80 billion, and approximately $220 billion is due to obesity. The portion of the total in the United States is approximately 90 percent of the total for the United States and Canada.

I don?t know what to make of such estimates.? They are always based on assumptions that may or may not be valid.?

One thing is clear: obesity is expensive, personally, economically, and politically.

That?s why it?s a good idea to support public health initiatives to make it easier for people to maintain a healthy weight.

Providing healthier food in schools, getting junk food out of schools, soda taxes, soda caps, and restrictions on marketing to kids are the kinds of ideas that are worth supporting.??

Now.?
