This month, we shine the BoF Spotlight on print designer Flaminia Saccucci, whose symphony of printed latex garments ? inspired by the sexiness of rubber, the masculinity of tyres and the feminine fragility of wild flowers ? snagged her the L?Or?al Professional Young Talent Award for the best student collection at the Central Saint Martins BA graduate show a few weeks back.

Speaking with BoF, the young Italian described her aesthetic as ?sharp, clean, but with a twist, and always balanced,? something which was particularly evident in the way her breakthrough collection harmoniously blended synthetic materials with natural florals.

But creating the collection was no simple task. Using a three colour separation screen printing technique to create the intricate floral prints and grappling with latex that can shrink during printing, Saccucci persisted until she achieved the effect she was looking for. Perfectly placing the tyre track prints was equally challenging. Saccucci?s perseverance in the print room seems to reflect her general work ethic. ?You just have to never give up,? said Saccucci.

For this month?s Spotlight, Saccucci has personally embellished the BoF logo with a tyre track encircling a fresh pink tulip, her current collection?s two signature prints. ?These are the two contrasting elements that best represent what my collection is about,? explained Saccucci.

Following her successful debut, Saccucci has been inundated with attention from talent scouts and buyers. But she is keen to consider her options carefully before making any major career decisions, such as starting her own label or joining a design house. ?I?m so young, this is just the beginning ? I don?t want to take the wrong step, because I want this to last,? she explained. ?When you?re in such a fortunate position of having all these possibilities, you want to make the right choice.?

While Saccucci is not currently receiving any professional business or career advice, preferring to seek out opinions from those she trusts and make her own decisions, she has racked up some substantial real-life experience with a series of internships at Balmain, Viktor & Rolf, Alberta Ferretti and Alexander McQueen.

Saccucci also has a refreshing a sense of humility, despite being critically acclaimed at just twenty five years old, admitting that her passion for design stems from creating toilet paper dresses for her dolls when she was a little girl. Indeed, she seems firmly focused on the quality of her work, rather than the hype surrounding it. ?I never expected to win the L?Or?al award,? she said incredulously. ?I had this dream of making the press show, but I didn?t even think of prizes!?

Saccucci intends on using the cash award to advance her career, perhaps by seeking further education or establishing her own label, later on in life. Whichever path she chooses, we wish Flaminia Saccucci the best of luck and eagerly await her next collection, whether it?s crafted from toilet paper, latex or lustrous silk.

Health Canada has announced it will be reviewing the safety of the contraceptive pills Yaz and Yasmin over concerns users may have a two to three times greater risk of developing blood clots, compared to those who use other brands of contraceptive pills.

Health Canada?s decision follows in the footsteps of an announcement in may that the United State?s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was also reviewing the safety of the contraceptive pills.

?Blood clots are a rare but well known side effect associated with all birth control pills,? said a statement from the Canadian federal department.

Recent studies, including two new studies published in the British Medical Journal, suggest the risk of venous thromboembolism (blood clots) with drospirenone-containing contraceptive pills may be two to three times greater than with birth control pills containing another type of progestin.

Drospirenone is one form of the female sex hormone known as progestin.? while most contraceptive pills contain a combination of progestin and estrogen, some contain different types of progestin only.

In Canada, Yaz and Yasmin, produced by Bayer, are the only contraceptive pills containing drospirenone.

Bayer is facing 7000 Yaz-related lawsuits in the U.S. from women who say the drug manufacturer misrepresented the dangers associated with using the birth control pills ? side effects including stroke, cardiac arrest, blood clots, and gallbladder problems.

One wrongful death lawsuit involves an 18-year-old New Jersey college student, Michelle Pfleger, who died of cardiac arrest after taking Yaz for acne treatment. A blood clot had lodged in her lungs resulting in her sudden death on her way to classes on September 24, 2010. her mother Joan Cummins filed suit against Bayer on may 10.

In light of the concerns, Health Canada announced they will be ?investigating and reviewing the studies.??

?Health Canada will take appropriate action as necessary once the review is complete,? said the statement on the federal website. ?This could include informing health professionals and Canadians of new safety information resulting from Health Canada?s review.?

Meanwhile, Bayer issued a press release claiming studies have confirmed the risk from Yaz and Yasmin is comparable to other contraceptives.

?Bayer?s oral contraceptives have been and continue to be extensively studied worldwide and for most healthy women of reproductive age, the benefits of [oral contraceptives such as Yaz and Yasmin] will outweigh the risks when used as directed,? the company said.

According to Bayer, the risk of venous thromboembolism (blood clots) for women taking Yaz or Yasmin is also ?lower than the risk for VTE associated with pregnancy and delivery.?

2nd man acquittal in fatal ground zero fire (AP)

NEW YORK ? A construction company safety supervisor was acquitted Wednesday of all criminal charges in a blaze that killed two firefighters at a condemned ground zero building. The verdict came a day after another acquittal in the case and leaves one man and a company still facing a verdict in the manslaughter case.

After jurors acquitted Jeffrey Melofchik on Wednesday, a judge continued weighing the charges against the remaining defendants as jurors spoke out about a trial they called a case of blaming a few for the mistakes of many surrounding the August 2007 fire at the former Deutsche Bank building. It was being dismantled in a complicated process designed to contain toxins.

"It was just a project with a lot of difficult things going on, and I didn't think anybody should be blamed for what happened," an elated but composed Melofchik, 49, said as he left court with his wife, Audrey, and other friends and relatives. Some had exclaimed "yes!" on hearing "not guilty" to the second of two manslaughter charges.

"It was a tragic event, and the fact that they ignored everybody else and just picked the three of us, I thought, was totally wrong," Melofchik said.

The blaze, which killed firefighters Robert Beddia and Joseph P. Graffagnino, spotlighted poor oversight of the building, which had been damaged and contaminated in the Sept. 11 terror attacks. Government agencies had missed inspections and failed to recognize dangers in the project's design.

Melofchik, asbestos cleanup foreman Salvatore DePaola, 56; and asbestos cleanup director Mitchel Alvo, 59, were the only people criminally charged in the fire. The John Galt Corp., which employed Alvo and DePaola, was the only company charged. The jury acquitted DePaola of all charges Tuesday.

"Everybody's a scapegoat," foreman Keith Spencer, a 41-year-old UPS worker, said as jurors left court Wednesday. "More people should have been accountable for this."

Alvo and the Galt company chose to have a judge decide the case against them; she has not said when she will rule.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said prosecutors respected the verdict and "hope that this prosecution brought necessary attention to the importance of safety in the construction and demolition industries."

A worker's careless smoking sparked the blaze, which tore through nine floors of the building. The firefighters died after being trapped in thick smoke and running out of air in their oxygen tanks.

Prosecutors said the critical factor in their deaths was a broken firefighting pipe, called a standpipe. Unable to use it, firefighters spent about an hour devising another way to get water on the flames on upper floors. In the meantime, the fire grew to deadly proportions, prosecutors said.

They said Alvo, DePaola and Melofchik knew the pipe had broken about eight months before. Under pressure not to let the cleanup lag, the men had the broken segment carted away and did nothing to repair or report it, prosecutors said. Nonetheless, Melofchik kept signing daily reports saying the building's fire-suppression system was working, according to evidence presented at the trial.

Defense lawyers said the men didn't realize the pipe's firefighting role and that the fire was fed by numerous hazards and regulators' mistakes.

Jurors said they weren't convinced that Alvo and Melofchik bore responsibility for the broken pipe, though they said they struggled more when deciding about Melofchik because of his safety-manager job. Ultimately, they felt it wasn't Alvo's job to identify and safeguard the standpipe, and testimony left questions about the extent of Melofchik's training in dealing with the pipe and whether he was aware of the break, jurors said.

And they came away from more than two months of testimony convinced that other problems had played too big a part in the deadly conditions to attribute the firefighters' deaths to the standpipe.

The project was supposed to be closely monitored by a list of government agencies. But it turned out that the Fire Department of New York hadn't inspected the building for more than a year, though it was required to do so every 15 days. Building, environmental and labor inspectors hadn't realized that firefighting would be complicated by some measures that had been undertaken to control toxins, including plywood stairwell barriers and a fan system that kept smoke in and pulled it down.

The stairwell barriers and, especially, the Fire Department's missed inspections made an impact on juror Rosemary Cardillo. "I felt as though, if they had come in and did their inspections, they would have been aware" of the problems before the fire, the retired real estate broker said.

To juror Lynette Cedeno, the case amounted to "blaming the little guy."

"Justice ? it needs to start from the top, where people take responsibility for what their responsibility is, and not just pass it off," said Cedeno, 50, an occupational therapist who works for the city school system.

The city and Melofchik's employer, general contractor Bovis Lend Lease, acknowledged errors in dealing with the former bank building. The Fire Department created dozens of inspection and auditing jobs, and Bovis agreed to finance a $10 million memorial fund for slain firefighters' families, among other responses.

Then-District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said when the indictments were revealed that it would be pointless to try to prosecute the city because governments are generally immune from criminal prosecution, though individual officials and employees sometimes are charged with crimes.

Melofchik's lawyer, Edward J.M. Little, said he hoped the jury verdicts had sent prosecutors a message: "Because a case is sexy doesn't mean it should be brought."

"I think they've learned a lesson here," he said, but "it came at a terrible psychological cost for Jeff and his family."

Melofchik said he had been unable to work during the trial and had striven to keep the details from his sons, 16 and 18.

The last of the former bank building was taken down in February.

Opening the Bidding at Bridge

Each game of Acol bridge starts with bidding. During the bidding, the partner?s send each other coded messages about their hand in the form of ?bids?.

Bidding starts with one club, one diamond, one heart, one space and one No Trump (NT). A bid of one means that you believe you can win 7 tricks (the first six tricks are not scored).

An opening bid of one of a suit (clubs, diamonds, hearts or spades) means: ? I have 12 or more points and at least 4 cards in the suit I bid? An opening bid of 1NT means: ? I have 12-14 points and a balanced hand?.

A balanced hand contains cards in every suit (no voids), has no singleton (one card in a suit) and can have only one doubleton (two cards in a suit).

For example, four spades, 3 hearts, 3 diamonds and 3 clubs is a balanced hand. 3 spades, 4 hearts, 2 diamonds and 4 clubs is also a balanced hand (it only contains one doubleton). However, 4 spades, 5 hearts, 2 diamonds and 2 clubs is NOT a balanced hand ? it has two doubletons (in diamonds and clubs).

In summary ? you open the bidding if you have 12 or more points. Open with one of a suit if you have at least four cards in that suit. Open with 1NT if you have 12-14 points AND a balanced hand.

'Dabangg' dominates Bollywood awards with 6 prizes (AP)

TORONTO ? "Dabangg," a tale about a corrupt police officer, dominated the 12th International Indian Film Academy awards, snagging six prizes including best picture at the star-studded event in Toronto ? held on North American soil for the first time.

"My Name is Khan" also scooped up several top honors at the five-hour award bash that started Saturday night and rolled over into early Sunday. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan took the prize for leading male role for the film, about the treatment of Muslims in a world of heightened suspicions following the Sept. 11 attacks.

Khan played the family's Muslim patriarch who suffers from Asperger's syndrome. The film, nominated in seven categories, also took home the prize for best direction and best story. Khan was handed his award by Bollywood superstar Anil Kapoor and two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank, who congratulated Bollywood for helping to unite the world through film.

"Hollywood and Indian cinema must bring the world closer together," said Swank, draped in a glittering sleeveless deep red gown. "I believe in IIFA's vision ? one people, one world."

Another Academy Award winner, Cuba Gooding Jr. presented the best director award to Karan Johar for "My Name is Khan," declaring that he was impressed by the power of Indian films around the world.

"I think it's absolutely wonderful how India has traveled the world of entertainment and I would love to play and be a part of a Bollywood movie myself," said Gooding, who broke out into a few dance moves.

"Dabangg" led the awards tally sweeping trophies in the music category in Toronto's packed Rogers Centre, filled with more than 22,000 Bollywood fans and stars. The hit took the prize for best playback singer female, best playback singer male and best music director. A playback singer pre-records songs so Bollywood actors can lip sync to them in their films. "Dabangg" star Sonu Sood won for best performance in a negative role. The film also garnered the awards for best screenplay and for best female debut which went to Sonakshi Sinha for her role in the film as Sood's love interest.

Anushka Sharma won the best female lead for her role as an assistant to a wedding planner in "Band Baaja Baaraat," a film about the world of wedding planning. Arjun Rampal took home the best male supporting prize for the political thriller "Raajneeti," and best supporting female role award went to Prachi Desai for "Once Upon a Time in Mumbai."

Kangana Ranaut, the model turned actress, gave the night's first performance with her fellow "Double Dhamaal" actors Arshad Warsi, Javeed Jaffrey and Ashish Chaudry. The film was one of several that premiered during the IIFA weekend.

A lifetime achievement award was given to Dharmendra Deol, patriarch of the Deol dynasty, who received the special award for his 55-year-long career. Dharmendra's sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol, Bollywood stars in their own right, performed with their father for the first time on stage to a song from their film "Yamla, Pagla, Deewane."

Outstanding achievement in Indian cinema went to Sharmila Tagore, who has starred in such films as "Mera Sapnon Ki Rani," "Namkeen," and "Chingari," and has spent 52 years in the industry. Tagore's son is the popular Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan. She said her son wanted to attend the weekend festivities, but couldn't because they are both finishing films.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty gave a speech at the ceremony, which also saw a number of energy-packed Bollywood dance numbers and tributes, capping the three days of festivities. McGuinty lured the IIFA to the city by pledging $12.25 million.

Roughly 16,000 of the 22,000 tickets to the awards ceremony available to the public sold out in minutes. Those lucky enough to get seats were charged between $49 and $126, while resellers offered last-minute tickets online for more than $1,500 each.

Launched in 2000 at the Millennium Dome in London, the annual IIFA awards have traveled around the world in the hopes of exposing the genre to various audiences and opening trade markets.

Holding the event in Toronto was a strategic move as India's cinematic royalty makes a bid for a piece of the North American box office. Held previously in Amsterdam, Sri Lanka, Macau, London, Malaysia, Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok and Johannesburg, IIFA is capitalizing on the already huge Bollywood following in Toronto, which has an estimated population of nearly 700,000 South Asians.

"For the first time in its 12-year history, IIFA makes its North American debut, and its biggest stars are you," Kapoor said in a mix of English, Hindi and Punjabi while pointing to the audience. "Thank you Ontario. Thank you so much for making us feel the warmth in Canada."

Organizers say more than 200 filmmakers and actors came from overseas in the bid to gain inroads into the North American market and build production partnerships.

The awards gala is considered India's biggest media event and one of world's most-watched televised spectacles, with hundreds of millions of viewers tuning in.

In the post earlier this week about animation executive Max Howard, I wrote (somewhat flippantly) that nobody understood why ?almost anybody who worked in musical theater could become an animation executive at Disney? in the 1980s and ?90s. Of course, many people do know. A Brew reader, who prefers to remain anonymous, emailed a nice capsule history of what happened during that period:

Roy Disney was seeking a leader to put animation on a solid footing to move forward. He sought the advice of Robert Fitzpatrick, then-President of CalArts. Bob had just finished his stint as the director of the highly-successful Olympic Arts Festival, and he suggested that perhaps an arts management structure might be the most natural for Animation?both are project-based, but maintain ongoing management and cultural growth/identity.

Bob?s lieutenant on the Olympic Arts Festival was Peter Schneider. Bob connected Peter and Roy, and the rest is pretty well-known. Peter had worked with Howard Ashman and Alan Menken on ?Little Shop of Horrors,? he brought in a lot of the Olympic Arts and theater colleagues in those early years in the 1980s including Thomas Schumacher, Kathleen Gavin, Karen Schmidt, etc.

As Ashman and Menken further identified Animation as a form of Musical Theater, the talents from that world naturally began to migrate to Animation. People often forget that there was no real paradigm for how Animation might work, structurally, in the 1990s, so they brought in all kinds of talents from all manner of entertainment, a lot from Theater, since it seemed to bear a stronger resemblance to the creative environment of Animation.

As much as we love the plucky, ugly-duckling Isuzu Vehicross, our vote goes to the "PUV." That's the "performance utility vehicle" genre Isuzu bet the farm on back in the late 1990s. The Vehicross was supposed to attract those young, fun-loving, iconoclastic Lollapalooza types that weren't having any of that lame mainstream automotive stuff. Until they got a good look at the Vehicross and went straight to the BMW dealership and bought used. Or just kept their K-cars running for another decade.

Speech Therapists, officially called speech-language pathologists and sometimes called SLP?s, tend to work with patients who have a variety of speech-related disorders. These disorders can include the inability to generate absolute sounds, speech rhythm along with fluency problems, and voice disorders. They additionally help folks who choose to modify accents or who have swallowing difficulties. Speech pathologists? work involves assessment, pronouncement, treatment in addition to interception of speech-related disorders.

Speech Therpists held about 119,000 jobs in 2008. Approximately half of these jobs were in schools, including pre-schools and elementary and secondary schools. Other speech therapists worked in hospitals, offices of other health practitioners, including speech-language pathologists, skilled nursing care facilities, home health care services, individual and family services, outpatient care centers and child day care services. Some speech pathologists were self-employed.

In most states one must have a master?s degree in speech-language pathology to work as a speech therapist. Coursework includes anatomy, physiology, the nature of disorders and the elements of acoustics. Graduate students recieve supervised clinical preparation.

Licensing requirements additionally include 300 to 375 hours of supervised clinical practice in addition to nine months of postgraduate clinical background. :

The job outlook of speech therapists is expected to expand faster than the average for all occupations by the year 2018. Multilingual speech language pathologists will be greatest in demand, especially those who speak fluent Spanish and English. Pat Barry 2.0 looks to seize opportunity against Cheick Kongo

PITTSBURGH -- You don't need to point out Pat Barry's weaknesses as a fighter to him. He's well aware of his reputation as a striker with no ground game.

"The three things that Pat Barry needs more than anything else is heavyweight training partners, jiu-jitsu and wrestling. The whole world knows that, like I'm allergic to the ground or something," Barry said.

Even the UFC's video game reflected his problems with grappling.

"Whoever made the video game, as soon as my character falls down, he dies. Even if I just lay down on my back, he dies."

But to learn the ground game and give him an edge in his UFC on Versus 4 bout with Cheick Kongo, he had to find other heavyweights who knew the ground game inside and out. He found that at Death Clutch, the Minnesota-based training home of Brock Lesnar that is run by former University of Minnesota wrestling coach Marty Morgan. Barry first went to Death Clutch to work with Lesnar on striking and was asked to stay. Now, he works with Lesnar, Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad (pictured), and Chris Tuchsurer, among other big guys.

"If anything, I think Marty Morgan saw my work ethic, saw that I always work hard, I don't complain -- I complain a little bit, but ignore my complaining -- he saw that I learn fast, and being a student of the game, it's hard for him to see someone struggle and ignore it. He's like superman. He saw it and came to the rescue."

Under Morgan's tutelage, Barry said that his game has evolved to keep up with the ever-changing and growing sport.

"What I was doing in my mind was enough, but apparently there is never enough, especially with the way the sport is evolving. You've got wrestlers coming and knocking people unconscious. You have strikers who take people to the ground and beat them up. It never stops."

Like Barry, Kongo has a background in kickboxing, but has added a nasty component of ground and pound to his arsenal in recent bouts. Sunday night, Barry will finally get the bout that he has been asking for since signing with the UFC.

"This is the fight I've been asking for ever since I've gotten in the UFC. It's the opportunity I was waiting for. He's a heavyweight striker, and he was known as one of the most deadly heavyweight strikers in the UFC. I never brag, I don't have the most killer ego, but I couldn't take hearing that. I want to be known as the guy to watch out for."

Feds: Fort Hood massacre inspired Seattle plot (AP)

SEATTLE ? The massacre at Fort Hood, Texas, and the ongoing war crimes prosecutions of Washington state soldiers helped inspire a terror plot in which two men planned to attack a military recruiting station in Seattle with grenades and machine guns, according to a federal complaint filed Thursday.

Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif, also known as Joseph Anthony Davis, of Seattle, and Walli Mujahidh, also known as Frederick Domingue Jr., of Los Angeles, were arrested Wednesday night.

The FBI ensnared them in a terror sting after they arrived at a warehouse garage to pick up machine guns to use in the attack, authorities said. The weapons had been rendered inoperable by federal agents and posed no risk to the public.

The complaint, written by FBI Special Agent Albert C. Kelly III and filed in U.S. District Court, paints Abdul-Latif as the leader of the effort. In conversations with an FBI informant, he spoke admiringly of the 2009 massacre at Fort Hood when a lone gunman killed 13 people, and of the war crimes charges against five Washington state soldiers accused of killing three Afghan civilians for sport last year.

"Abdul-Latif said that he was not comfortable with letting the legal system deal with these matters," Kelly wrote.

The two suspects appeared in federal court Thursday in tan prison garb and listened as prosecutor recited the charges against them. Detention hearings were set for next Wednesday. Their court-appointed defense lawyers declined to comment.

The suspects could face life in prison if convicted.

Authorities learned of the plot early this month when a third person recruited to participate alerted the Seattle Police Department, the complaint said. Investigators immediately began monitoring the men, and the confidential informant, who has known Abdul-Latif for years and has a criminal record of his own, continued to string them along by promising to obtain weapons.

The recruiting station, the Military Entrance Processing Station on East Marginal Way in Seattle, is adjacent to a daycare inside a building called Federal Center South. Recruits for all military branches are screened and processed there.

The Homeland Security Department said in a May 31 assessment with other organizations that it did not think it likely there would be coordinated terrorist attacks against military recruiting and National Guard facilities.

The agencies agreed, however, that lone offenders or groups would continue to try to launch attacks against these facilities.

In audio and video recordings, the suspects in the Seattle case discussed the plot at length, discussing how to time their attack at military recruits, such as by tossing grenades in the cafeteria, the complaint said.

"The key thing to remember here is, is we are not targeting anybody innocent ? that means old people, women out of uniform, any children," Abdul-Latif is quoted as saying. "Just people who wear the green for the kaffir Army, that's who we're going after."

The agent wrote that they also fantasized about the headlines the attack would generate ? "Three Muslim Males Walk Into MEPS Building, Seattle, Washington, And Gun Down Everybody" ? and speculated that if they got control of the building, television news crews would arrive to cover them.

Mujahidh, 32, voluntarily spoke with investigators after the arrests and confessed, the complaint said.

"Mujahidh admitted that he was planning on carrying out an attack at the MEPS for the purpose of killing United States military personnel in order to prevent them from going to Islamic lands and killing Muslims," the complaint said.

Abdul-Latif, 33, and Mujahidh, 32, are charged by complaint with conspiracy to murder officers and employees of the United States, conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, and possession of firearms in furtherance of crimes of violence. Abdul-Latif is also charged with two counts of illegal possession of firearms.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle said the defendants initially planned to attack Joint Base Lewis-McChord but later changed targets. The defendants intended to carry out their attack with both grenades and machine guns, the government said.

"The complaint alleges these men intended to carry out a deadly attack against our military where they should be most safe, here at home," Seattle U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan said in a statement. "This is a sobering reminder of our need to be vigilant."

Abdul-Latif has previous felony convictions for first-degree robbery of a Bremerton, Wash., convenience store and for custodial assault, as well as misdemeanor convictions for obstructing a law enforcement officer, assault and theft.

When he was prosecuted on the robbery charge in Kitsap County in 2002, he was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation, and despite some "issues" was found competent to participate in his defense, FBI Special Agent Albert C. Kelly III wrote in the complaint.

According to a copy of the evaluation, Abdul-Latif reported that he was originally from San Diego, where his father was serving time in prison, and that his mother lived in Bremerton but he had not seen her in a long time. He said he suffered from depression and abandonment issues, that he had "huffed" gasoline and smoked marijuana to get high, and that he tried to kill himself in 2001 by deliberately overdosing on seizure medication.

Abdul-Latif was sentenced to 31 months in prison on that charge. He served from January 2002 until July 2004 for a conviction of first-degree robbery in Kitsap County and a custodial assault in Walla Walla County, and committed two serious infractions while in custody ? assault in 2002 and fighting in 2004, said state Corrections Department spokesman Chad Lewis.

"There is nothing in Davis' records that indicates that he converted to Islam while he was in prison," Lewis said in an email.

Mujahidh does not appear to have a criminal record, the complaint said. It wasn't immediately clear how Abdul-Latif and Mujahidh became acquainted.

In a bankruptcy filing from a month ago, Abdul-Latif reported assets of about $3,000 and liabilities of about $6,000. He reported that about $2,000 in monthly income from a janitorial business was entirely nullified by the expenses of operating Fresh and Clean Janitorial. His wife, identified as Binta Moussa, was earning about $1,200 a month, according to court documents but that wasn't enough to cover their costs of living.

Steve Dashiak, a bankruptcy attorney representing Abdul-Latif, told The Associated Press he was stunned by the developments, and that his client seemed like a regular man.

"I sensed no ill will from him whatsoever," Dashiak said. "He seemed like a guy just trying to make it, having a rough time because business wasn't going very well. To say that I didn't see this coming would be an understatement."

A sign on the door of Abdul-Latif's apartment read in part: "In the Name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our lord we depend."

Potential recruits came and left as normal at the military processing center Thursday. Children and adults were having a barbecue behind a fence at the same building.

Army Corps of Engineers Col. Anthony Wright, commander of the Seattle district and senior official for the building, said he was kept informed about the threat and made some changes in security as a precaution.

"I've spent about three years in Iraq. It's a little different to feel it here in Seattle, but it's part of the world we live in," he said.
