Act as Trustee for your Individual 401k

With an Individual 401(k), you do not need to have a Custodian or 3rd party administrator; you may act as your own trustee. Acting as your own trustee is not as difficult as it sounds. You will simply be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the 401(k).

What type of things are involved with acting as your 401(k)s trustee?

  • Setting up the 401(k) checking account with a financial institution ? The 401(k) will need a checking or brokerage account where all the 401(k) funds will be held. This can be at any financial institution of your choice and will be set up in the name of the 401(k) using its EIN.
  • Rolling over funds into the 401(k) ? Sunwest Trust will provide you with all the forms that you will need to administer the plan yourself. You will use the Rollover Request Form to rollover funds from previous IRAs or 401(k)s.
  • Keeping track of investments ? We recommend that you keep a spread sheet on Excel or use something like Quick Books to keep track of all of your investments. It will also be imperative that you keep track of what contributions made to the account are traditional (tax-deferred) contributions and those that are Roth (after-tax) contributions.
  • Signing on behalf of your 401(k) for investments ? As trustee of the 401(k), you will be responsible for signing all investment documents. The investments will be purchased in the name of the 401(k), but you will sign as trustee.
  • IRS filing ? You are not required to file anything for your 401(k) until it has reached a value of $250,000. When your 401(k) reaches $250,000, you will be required to file a 5500 EZ on an annual basis for the 401(k).

These are not all of the things required of the trustee, but this is a basic list. If you have questions, please speak to a CPA or tax professional.

Leishman in doubt for British Open golf

Australia's newest golf champion Marc Leishman could be robbed of a start in the British Open due to immigration issues in the United States.

Leishman became the first Australian to win on the US PGA tour this season at last weekend's Travelers Championship, moving him to the top of a British Open qualification list.

The top two players not previously eligible from a cumulative money list, taken from The Players Championship through to the Greenbrier Classic, will gain entry into the 2012 Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes on July 19-22.

But even if Leishman remains in the top two, his major championship dreams look set to be put on hold because he is in the midst of a green card application in the US.

Leishman is eligible for a green card (permanent residency) due to his marriage to wife Audrey, who is an American citizen.

However, the process is lengthy, taking usually a minimum six months and, under US immigration law, someone with a pending application for permanent residency is unable to leave the country without prior consent.

Receiving advanced parole can take around two months and, while Leishman has made an eleventh hour bid, he still must sweat out the process.

His other hope is for his green card to be processed in time, a small chance given his application was lodged five months ago.

"I definitely don't want to miss the British so hopefully it will all come through in time but we haven't even had our interview yet so I'm not sure it's going to happen," Leishman said.

"The British is probably my favourite golf tournament of the year. I love playing links golf and I love everything about the UK so it would be good to go over and have a crack at it.

"It wasn't looking real good but my lawyers have just confirmed advanced parole has been lodged ... so fingers crossed it arrives before the British and, if I qualify, I can go."

In the meantime, Leishman will take his form to the AT & T National at Congressional Country Club just outside Washington DC.

Jason Day, Adam Scott, Greg Chalmers, Robert Allenby, Nick O'Hern and Rod Pampling join Leishman in an attempt to keep the Aussie success rolling.

"It would be awesome if we opened the floodgates for all of the Aussies and more for me as well," Leishman said.

"It's funny because this week probably sets up better for me than last week although it will be tough to back up from a win.

"But in saying that, there is no reason I can't play well again. I'm hitting it well and I felt good over the ball so I'll be doing my all to keep the roll going."

Day has decided to play, despite the impending birth of his first child, given his confidence on the layout.

The 24-year-old was second to Rory McIlroy in the 2011 US Open and famously closed the tournament with 45 straight bogey-free holes.

Elsewhere, Greg Norman will return to competitive golf by playing the third major of the Champions Tour, the Senior Players Championship.

Norman will join Peter Senior in Australia's quest for a first major of any kind over the past six years.

Celebrities gush over Canada [Photos]

As Canadians, we know we have the best country in the world (just taste the poutine!) but sometimes it's nice to hear it said out loud. Here are some famous entertainers who are clearly enchanted with the Great White North. Their gushing only reminds us of what we already know.

Jay Baruchel: "I truly, truly love my country and always have. In a country like Canada, we're not prone to jingoism and flag-waving, but I always was." (QMI Agency photo)

Ryan Reynolds: "I love Canada. It makes a nice hat for America. When America runs out of water, it's the first place I'll go. I gotta go home. I haven't been there in a long, long time." (WENN.COM)

Kristen Stewart: ?I feel like I should have dual citizenship...I?ve lived there numerous times. I love Vancouver.? (AFP photo)

Bruce Willis: "I had no idea Canada could be so much fun" (AFP photo)

Robert Pattinson: "I really like Canadians. Canadians vary, there's the East and the West coast Canadians but I really like working in Toronto. I like Torontonians. It was fun, it's a cool city." (AFP photo)

Carrie Underwood: ?The people are really cool. One of the first times I really got out and about in Canada, I went shopping all by myself, and nobody said a word to me. Nobody followed me to the bathroom or anything like that.?

Shania Twain: ?The gold goes to Canada's multicultural and tolerant society, which raised me to appreciate the importance of equality and compassion for others." (WENN.COM)

Kelly Ripa: "I?d be very interested to celebrate Christmas (in Alberta). I bet it?s just spectacular...It almost expect to see elves making toys outside my window when I wake up in the morning. It?s such as special place." (AFP photo)

Sarah Polley: "I do feel in the summer, when (Toronto is) humid, hot and sticky that it's kind of a sexy, hot, humid, popping colourful place. I think you have to live here to discover that side of it -- Toronto's not necessarily a city that jumps out at you if you're here for five nights. But if you actually live in the downtown area, where there's amazing residential areas in the middle of this urban environment, it's pretty amazing." (LAURA PEDERSEN/QMI AGENCY)

U.S. President Barack Obama: "Canada is one of the most impressive countries in the world." (AFP photo)

Mike Myers: "I come back lots. My family and friends are here (Toronto). I never really go too long without coming home." (AFP photo)

Rachel McAdams: "I feel very much at home (in Toronto) "I ride my bike everywhere. I have my favourite restaurants. My perfect day is riding to an amazing cinema called the Lightbox, then having a glass of wine and a quinoa salad." (Reuters files)

Jack White: "The air in Whitehorse, the accents of people in Newfoundland ? I just love that accent." (Reuters files)

Hugh Hefner: "They must be doing something right up there in Canada." (Reuters files)

Michael J. Fox: "If I?m having a bad hair day, I wear a touque. If I?m extra hungry I put some back bacon in my poutine. And if I?m watching the US and Canada play hockey, I?m sorry ? I?m wearing a maple leaf on my sweater." (WENN.COM)

Jane Fonda: "When I'm in Canada, I feel this is what the world should be like." (Reuters)

Dan Aykroyd: "Newfoundlanders represent the heart of Canada as a generous, compassionate, peacekeeping nation, with true, honest values and a love of the nation." (AFP photo)

Jim Carrey: "My upbringing in Canada made me the person I am. I will always be proud to be a Canadian." (WENN.COM)

Justin Bieber: "I?ll never be an American citizen. You guys are evil. Canada?s the best country in the world. We go to the doctor, and we don?t need to worry about paying him, but here, your whole life, you?re broke because of medical bills." (Ernest Doroszuk/QMI AGENCY)

Ex-NBA ref blows whistle on PTSD

FORT JACKSON, S.C. -- Bob Delaney said it's time to change the way people think about post traumatic stress.

The former New Jersey state trooper and NBA referee visited Fort Jackson June 21 to speak with Soldiers about his own struggles with post traumatic stress, and said he intentionally avoids using the word "disorder" to describe the problem.

"When you use the word 'disorder' it comes across as mental illness," he said. "My belief is that this is a human condition, it is not a mental illness. We need the doctors and the clinicians, but the first line of defense is peer-topeer therapy -- our ability to get these feelings out."

Delaney is touring TRADOC installations to hold outreach sessions with Soldiers and their families, discussing the impact Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder has on the individuals, family and friends. He has been dealing with PTSD since working undercover as a New Jersey state trooper in the 1970s.

Delaney operated under the name "Bobby Covert" and posed as the head of a trucking company that served as a front for an investigation into organized crime. Dubbed "Project Alpha," the joint task force produced more than 100 arrests, beginning with a raid in 1977 that brought charges against members of organized crime in three states.

"On the day of the raid, we were going to lock up 30 mob guys from the New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia area," Delaney said. "I was excited, because I was going to be able to go back to being Bob Delaney. I could get rid of this 'Bobby Covert' guy I'd been playing for three years."

The arrests went as planned, but Delaney said his emotional response to the raid took him by surprise. While standing with other members of law enforcement, he was spotted by a suspect named Ronnie Sardella as he was brought in for booking. Delaney had known Sardella well during his time undercover.

"Bobby, what'd they pinch ya for?" Sardella asked him.

Delaney relaxed his pose and revealed that his hands were not cuffed behind his back. A detective told Sardella that Delaney was a cop.

"The look that went between me and Ronnie Sardella was not one of anger, it was one of hurt," Delaney said. "He looked at me like, 'How can you do this to me? I'm your friend.'"

Delaney said his values were "twisted" and that part of him came to regret his actions. Betrayal didn't come naturally.

"I wasn't looking at myself like Bob Delaney, I saw myself as Bobby Covert," he said. "I didn't feel good about what I was doing to the people that I knew."

Ten days later, he learned that Sardella's associates had taken out a contract on his life.

During the following months, Delaney's professional behavior began to look more and more like the behavior of his undercover persona. A detective with a background in psychology suggested to Delaney that he might be suffering PTSD, an idea he initially rejected.

"I didn't take any particular notice to it and pushed him away," he said.

Because of the unique nature of the investigation, Delaney was asked to speak to organizations ranging from Congress to local police departments. During an address at a New Jersey police academy, he spoke to a psychology professor, a conversation that quickly turned into "informal therapy."

Delaney said he rejected the idea again, believing that post traumatic stress was something "Soldiers go through."

"I pushed him away, as well," he said.

FBI agent Louis Freeh, who would go on to become the bureau's fifth director, connected Delaney with Joe Pistone, a former FBI agent who spent six years undercover as "Donnie Brasco." Delaney said that speaking with someone who had lived with the day-to-day stress of undercover police work helped him to come to terms with his anxieties.

"That was my first introduction to peer-to-peer therapy," Delaney said. "Speaking to Pistone -- that was the first time I could look in somebody's eyes, hear their words and know that they understood what I was going through. So I'm a big believer in peer-to-peer therapy as the first line of defense against post traumatic stress."

Delaney went on to become an NBA referee who officiated more than 1,700 regular season games, 160 playoff contests, and nine finals before retiring. His tour is sponsored by the "NBA Cares" program, which has made him an ambassador in a PTSD outreach program.

Attendance at last Thursday's event was light, with fewer than a dozen Soldiers in the audience. Delaney abandoned many of his usual lecture techniques, bringing some of the audience closer to the front of the room for a personal dialogue.

"We don't have to eradicate post traumatic stress. We have to learn how to deal with it, manage it and try to lose some of it along the way," he said. "When we share experiences, we learn from each other."

Apple Has Shipped 250 Million iPhones In The ... - Business Insider

The fifth anniversary of the iPhone is coming up this week and what a five years it has been.

Apple has shipped 250 million iPhones worldwide since the product launched back in 2007, according to new data from Strategy Analytics, a global research firm.

While the first five years have been good for the iPhone, Strategy Analytics suggests the next five could prove to be more challenging as carriers rethink the cost of subsidizing the phone and Apple faces greater competition from companies like Samsung.

That said, there's still plenty of opportunity for growth. Apple is looking to expand into new markets abroad, perhaps most notably by partnering with China Mobile, a wireless carrier with more than 650 million subscribers. And Apple is expanding into new markets at home by finally making the iPhone available on the prepaid market.

Video: Flying robot swarm wows at Cannes

3 hrs.

The performance of a flying robot swarm at a creativity festival in France has echoes of the highly-coordinated human theatrics that kicked off the summer Olympics four years ago in Beijing.?

The difference here, of course, is that real-life robots, not humans, are the performers.

The robots are quadrotors ? helicopters with four rotors. Their coordinated performance, which gets increasingly complex and mesmerizing as the show goes on, was choreographed by KMel Robotics and Marshmallow Laser Feast.

The most recent performance was the opening ceremony for the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors? Showcase at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.KMel Robotics was founded in late 2011 by Alex Kushleyev and Daniel Mellinger, recent graduates of the University of Pennsylvania?s GRASP Lab.?

The duo is also responsible for this video showing nine quadrotors playing the James Bond theme.?

While KMel Robotics promises more information on this project soon, we can surmise a bit more on how they pulled off the performance with a look back at the James Bond playing stunt. Innovation Daily reported:?

The secrets to their smooth, graceful movement are their small size, four rotors and smart on-board processor. By moving each rotor at different speeds, the bots can tilt and turn. Their processors decide the swiftest, smoothest path from Point A to Point B, then send out commands to the rotors 600 times a second.

In a swarm, the robots can also monitor where they are compared to their neighbors. It's important that each robot does this by itself, as it would be too difficult to have one central computer controlling each robot as it flies.

When not showing off their artsy side, the machines could find work scoping out dangerous settings such as buildings after an earthquake or a radiation leak.?

We?ve also seen a quadrotor that keep people motivated on their daily runs. Maybe there?s an idea in there for the opening ceremony for the summer Olympics this July in London??

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's elite Republican Guard forces clashed with rebels just outside Damascus Tuesday in some of the most intense fighting involving the special forces guarding the capital since an uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began last year, activists said.

The clashes erupted near Republican Guard housing compounds and bases in the suburbs of Qudsaya and Hammah, about five miles (eight kilometers) from central Damascus, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. It said at least six people were killed in the fighting.

The Republican Guard, which is commanded by Assad's younger brother Maher, is tasked with protecting the capital, the seat of the regime's power.

The fighting suggested growing boldness by rebels as the more than 15-month effort to oust Assad turns increasingly militarized.

Clashes erupt regularly in the suburbs between troops and rebels, but Assad's forces have firm control of Damascus and it is very rare for fighting to take place near the Republican Guard bases. It was unclear what prompted the clashes or how close they were to the heavily guarded compounds.

Assad has faced an embarrassing wave of defections in recent days, including several senior officers and soldiers who fled to neighboring Turkey. Although high-level defections appear to be increasing, Assad's inner circle has remained largely intact.

State-run news agency SANA confirmed clashes in the area, claiming that dozens of gunmen attacked civilians and troops in Hammah. SANA said troops fought the attackers, including foreign fighters, killing dozens of them and detaining others.

Troops confiscated automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and large amounts of ammunition, according to SANA.

The Observatory and the Local Coordination Committees, another activist network, said troops stormed the Damascus neighborhood of Barzeh with armored personnel carriers, killing at least one person. Elsewhere in Syria, the LCC and the Observatory reported intense shelling in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour that killed at least five people.

Assad has promised reforms and named a new government last week, but it is headed by a key loyalist and the foreign, defense and interior ministers kept their jobs.

Syria's new Cabinet was sworn in front of Assad on Tuesday, Syrian TV reported. The new government is headed by Riad Farid Hijab, a former agriculture minister and a member of the ruling Baath Party.

The opposition, which boycotted the parliamentary elections in May, accuses Assad of trying to buy time and strengthen his power even as international condemnation over the regime crackdown grows.

As Syria veers toward civil war, fears are mounting that the violence could ignite regional unrest. Syrian activists say that more than 14,000 people have been killed since the conflict began in March 2011.

In Brussels, NATO's governing body met Tuesday and discussed the shooting down of a Turkish military plane by Syria last week.

The head of the NATO military alliance called the downing of the jet unacceptable after Turkey briefed NATO's North Atlantic Council on the incident. The talks were held under Article 4 of NATO's founding treaty, which allows a NATO member to request consultations if its security has been threatened.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the alliance condemned the Syrian attack "in the strongest terms" and expressed solidarity with Turkey but did not speak of any possible armed action against Syria.

"It's my clear expectation that the situation won't continue to escalate," Fogh Rasmussen told reporters after Tuesday's meeting. "What we have seen is a completely unacceptable act and I would expect Syria to take all necessary steps to avoid such events in the future."

Syria says the aircraft violated its airspace. But Turkey disagrees. According to Turkish officials, the plane had unintentionally strayed into Syrian airspace, but it was inside international airspace when it was brought down.

The jet's two missing crew members have not been found.

Turkey said Tuesday its military will respond to any future violation of its border by Syrian military elements. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkish Armed Forces "will respond to all violations on the Syrian border."

He said Syrian helicopters have violated Turkish airspace five times recently, without Turkish response.

Also Tuesday, Syria's state-run news agency said Syrian troops killed 10 "terrorists" in the Damascus suburb of Douma Monday night. The Syrian government refers to rebels as terrorists.

(AP) ? Visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin praised his Palestinian counterpart Tuesday for what he said was a "responsible" position in negotiations with Israel, frozen for nearly four years, and said Russia has no problem recognizing a Palestinian state.

Putin also offered veiled criticism of Israel, saying unilateral actions ? an apparent reference to Israeli settlement construction on war-won land ? is not constructive.

Putin spoke at the end of a visit to the biblical West Bank town of Bethlehem, with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas by his side. Putin inaugurated a Russian cultural and language center in Bethlehem and toured the church built over the traditional birth grotto of Jesus.

Israeli-Palestinian talks on the terms of Palestinian statehood broke off in 2008. Repeated efforts to restart them have failed because of wide gaps between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abbas.

Netanyahu says he is ready to resume talks but rejects preconditions. Abbas says there's no point negotiating as long as Israel keeps building for Jews in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, occupied territories the Palestinians want for a state, along with the Gaza Strip. Israel has moved half a million settlers to the West Bank and east Jerusalem since the 1967 war. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005.

"We talked about ways of overcoming the dilemma of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process," Putin said Tuesday. "I point out here the responsible position of President Abbas and his endeavor to reach a peaceful settlement based on a two-state settlement."

"I am sure that all unilateral actions are not constructive," he added.

Russia is an important Mideast player, in part because it is a member of the "Quartet" of mediators that includes the United States, the European Union and the United Nations. Of the four, Russia is seen as the most sympathetic to the Palestinians but has little sway over the group, because the United States has traditionally claimed the dominant role in mediating between the two sides.

With negotiations frozen, Abbas has sought to increase Palestinian leverage by seeking U.N. recognition of a state of Palestine according to the pre-1967 war frontiers. Palestinian diplomats have also toured the world in search of recognition of Palestine by individual countries.

Dozens of countries, including the former Soviet Union, did so after a 1988 statehood declaration by the Palestine Liberation Organization. Putin said Tuesday that Russia sticks by that decision. The United States and Israel have urged Abbas to halt all attempts to seek recognition of a Palestinian state and wait for a deal with Israel.

Abbas reiterated Tuesday that negotiations with Israel remain his key goal. He said he asked Putin for help in persuading Israel to release veteran Palestinian prisoners who've been in jail since before the interim Israeli-Palestinian peace deals of the mid-1990s.

Later Tuesday, Putin traveled to neighboring Jordan, where officials said he discussed with Jordan's King Abdullah II ways to end the uprising in Syria, restarting Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, Iran's nuclear program, Russian assistance to Jordan to build a nuclear reactor for peaceful purposes and modernizing an oil terminal in the Gulf of Aqaba.

With close ties to Iran and a vote on the U.N. Security Council, Russia is seen as an important player that could influence Tehran, though it has in the past watered down international pressure on the Islamic Republic.

Russia is also one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's closest allies. Assad has drawn international condemnation for his bloody crackdown on the country's armed uprising.

As the closed-door meeting began in Amman, Jordan's banned Tahrir, or Liberation Party, condemned Putin as an "enemy who is not welcome in Jordan."

It called Putin "an arch enemy of Islam and Muslims," citing his close ties with Assad. "His visit to Jordan is an arrogant challenge to the feeling of Muslims and a disdain of innocent blood shed in Syria."

On Monday, Putin met Netanyahu, who urged Russia to step up pressure on Iran to curb its suspect nuclear program. Putin said his talks with Netanyahu covered the situation in Iran and the uprising in Syria, adding that he saw negotiations as the only solution for such matters.

At a state dinner Monday, Israeli President Shimon Peres pressed Putin further, asking that he "raise his voice" against a nuclear Iran. Putin responded by saying that Russia has a "national interest" to secure peace and quiet in Israel but did not elaborate further.

Amber Portwood Struggling to Maintain Relationship With Daughter in Prison

She may be behind bars, but Teen Mom star Amber Portwood is willing to do whatever it takes to maintain a relationship with her 3-year-old daughter, Leah.

Or at least she was, before she chose prison over her child.

It's this sad turn of events that makes the final season of Teen Mom so gut wrenching. On tonight's episode, her time in rehab in Malibu, Calif., is chronicled.

Gary Shirley's ex-fiancee receives a visit from Leah and her father, but their reunion doesn't exactly go off without a hitch, thanks in part to a court order.

Amber Pic

The Aeropostale-shirt-wearing Gary was shocked to find out that he's barred, legally, from being in the same room with his ex and daughter simultaneously.

"I brought Leah with me but I guess we can't be together," he says, and after an embrace, the couple part ways so Amber Portwood can visit with Leah.

"This is where Mommy's been living for a while," Portwood tells her.

Despite her recent legal troubles, Portwood has vowed to keep up her relationship with Shirley and their little girl as much as possible while behind bars.

Good luck with that, given your five-year sentence. Hopefully Jenelle Evans and Gary Head take note, because they're heading down the same road.

Free Workplace ESL program enhances workplace communication ...

Milton, ON: Last week, employees at Kenco Logistic Services celebrated a special milestone in their careers?graduation from the Workplace ESL (English as a Second Language) program. Over the past 10 weeks, nine employees participated in classes designed to help them better communicate in English to meet the needs of their specific workplace. The program is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration and coordinated by The Centre for Skills Development & Training.

?

?Kenco is a forward-thinking company that recognizes the economic benefits of hiring skilled newcomers,? said Kathy Mills, The Centre?s CAO. ?They also recognize how important English literacy is to today?s workplace. By participating in the Workplace ESL program, they have demonstrated a willingness to invest in their workforce?and in their community.?

?

Kenco?s Whirlpool Regional Distribution Centre is a state of the art facility that employs more than 100 people. Many of the company?s workforce are new Canadians, and, while they are highly skilled and trained in completing their job duties, some still struggle when it comes to communicating clearly in English. The Centre worked closely with Kenco to develop a customized curriculum that included lessons on language specific to their work environment and on health and safety processes.

?Employees who took the training are more confident, and they have improved spelling, grammar and pronunciation, which helps with problem-solving and teamwork,? said Gloria Chaumont, HR Manager at Kenco. ?We have also seen improvement in their understanding of health and safety policies and procedures, and knowledge of acronyms that are common in today?s business world.?

?

?The classes were not only great learning experiences; everyone had fun!? continued Ms. Chaumont. ?There was always a lot of laughter coming from our training room when the classes were in session, which added to the team-building experience.
