Starwood set to open 100 new hotels in China

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has revealed that it is set to double its presence in China, with 103 properties currently open in the country and another 100 in the pipeline.

The chain has already launched 11 new establishments in the Asian nation in 2012 and is set to begin welcoming guests at a further 13 before the end of the year.

Celebrating its growth at the Sheraton Shanghai Hongkou Hotel following an Asia Pacific investor day, Starwood revealed that China is now its second-largest market outside the United States.

Vasant Prabhu, vice chairman and chief financial officer of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, said: 'Our celebration of our more than 100 hotels in operation and 100 hotels in the pipeline marks another significant milestone for Starwood's growth and development in China as we double our footprint in the region.'

The company made its debut in this part of the world with the opening of the Great Wall Sheraton Hotel in Beijing in 1985.

Its portfolio in the country now includes eight Le Meridien hotels in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Qingdao, Xiamen and other cities.
