Mayor's Luncheon Held as Part of GoDaddy.com Bowl Festivities

The Arkansas State football team made its way to the Mobile Convention Center on Friday to take part in the Mayor's Lucheon, which featured a 2011 Red Wolves' highlight video, a live performance by the ASUband and cheerleaders and a number of speakers that included ASUSystem President Dr. Charles Welch and former NFL-great Chris Carter.

Held in conjunction with the GoDaddy.com Bowl, the Mayor's Luncheon also recognized former ASUSystem President Dr. Leslie Wyatt as one its latest Champion of Life honorees. Since its inception in 1999, the GoDaddy.com Bowl (formerly the GMAC Bowl) has given numerous Champion of Life awards. Honorees have achieved great success in their chosen field through dedication and hard work.

Prior to the luncheon, ASUDirector of Athletics Dr.Dean Lee and Interim Head Coach David Gunn participated in a press conference with others involved in the Mayor's Luncheon, including Carter, City of Mobile Mayor Sam Jones and David Welsh with GoDaddy.com. Mayor Jones presented a key to the city to Lee, who then addressed the media along with Gunn.

"We are so grateful for the hospitality we have received here in Mobile, and we are looking forward to having the Red Wolves nation invade your city," said Lee. "We are looking forward to great competition on Sunday and a great game. We are grateful to GoDaddy.com for their support and making this happen. On behalf of all of us at Arkansas State, our coaches and student-athletes, thank you so much for allowing us to be here."

"We are delighted to be here," said Gunn. "It has been a wonderful experience thus far. The City of Mobile has displayed great hospitality and our team is certainly appreciative of that. We look forward to representing Arkansas State and the entire State of Arkansas. Today and tomorrow, the Arkansas State nation will begin to descend on Mobile, and we are looking forward to that and are certainly excited about everything that is yet to take place."

The Red Wolves finished the regular season at 10-2 overall and won the Sun Belt Conference championship with a perfect 8-0 slate. Arkansas State will take on Northern Illinois in the Jan. 8 GoDaddy.com Bowl. The Huskies finished the regular season at 10-3 with an eight-game win streak, and won the Mid-American Conference championship. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
