Located in Bayonne, New Jersey on Broadway, The Mediterraneo is one of several Spanish restaurants in town and sets itself apart as a more elegant destination. If you?re looking for authentic Spanish food in a relaxing, though upscale environment, you should pay them a visit.

Atmosphere

Decorated in muted colors with European style prints lining the walls, The Mediterraneo?s atmosphere projects a quiet authenticity without being ostentatious. Large tablecloth covered tables; gleaming silverware and polished glasses await new patrons. Chairs are comfortable and promote comfortable posture throughout your dining experience.

Service

Even better restaurants lack some of the most basic service. Waiting too long in between say placing your drink order and ordering up your main course can be more than annoying. Good service emphasizes the mark of a good eatery. At The Mediterraneo, service is quick, friendly and efficient. Water glasses were refilled consistently without having to ask for more and the tablecloth was brushed for crumbs and straightened more than several times during my dinner.

Dining Fare

Spanish cuisine like Spain?s culture is varied and lively. The Mediterraneo deftly maintains this tradition. Appetizers include: Gambas a la Plancha (Grilled Shrimp), Camarones al Ajillio (Shrimp in Garlic Sauce), Chorizos a la Plancha ( Broiled Spanish Sausage) and Calamares Fritos (Fried Calamari). My favorites are shrimp in garlic sauce and broiled Spanish sausage. Both are served up piping hot and will delight with large portions. Unlike some places, the appetizers aren?t a skimpy afterthought, but impress and satisfy as a true precursor to your main course.

Soups include: Sopa de Mariscos (Seafood Soup)and Caldo Gallego (Galician Soup). I chose a basic vegetable and shredded pork soup loaded with plump potatoes. I?m generally not a soup lover, but this was full-bodied and quite tasty.

Entrees include: Pollo Con Arroz (Chicken & rice with sausages), Pollo Villaroy (Breast of chicken b?chamel sauce (dipped in egg, breaded and fried), Medallones de Filet Mig?on (Broiled Medallions of Filet Mig?on in a mushroom sauce) and Ternera a la Plancha (Grilled Veal with garlic and wine). My entree was Chicken Francesa. It was slightly saltier than I?d usually prefer, but that was never overpowering nor disappointing.

Report Card

My overall experience was a pleasant one. The food was delicious and the servers were professional and friendly. Wait time between appetizers and main entree serving was a bit long, but owing to the fact it was a busy Friday night is certainly forgivable. The Mediterraneo Restaurant of Bayonne, NJ is a reasonably priced authentic style Spanish restaurant for those wanting a bit more upscale atmosphere and price range. It won?t disappoint true Spanish cuisine connoisseurs and excels as a great introduction to those who?ve never eaten real Spanish food.
