Green Wave softball team advances to district finals

The Green Wave softball team clinched home-field advantage for the District 6 playoff series finals with a 7-0 win over Lugoff-Elgin Saturday. Summerville (23-3) will host the winner of Monday?s Sumter/Lugoff-Elgin game Wednesday in the finals and the Green Wave will only have to win one game in order to advance to the next round. Rochelle Lyda had the game-winning RBI as she drove in Sarah Montei with a single in the bottom of the third inning. Montei reached on a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wave pitcher Malori Myers. Summerville had a big turn at bat in the bottom of the fourth, when it scored five runs. Kaitlyn Clark kicked things off with a single. Sarah Windham followed by reaching on an error and then Hannah Horton drove in pinch runner Lauren Keefer. Taylor Wuerfel singled to plate Windham; Montei drove in Horton and Myers singled to drive in Wuerfel and Montei. ?We finally jumped on them,? Summerville coach Heather Tucker said. ?We put the ball in play and ran the bases aggressively. When you are able to win the first two games in the playoffs it gives you a huge advantage so we are happy about that.? Montei was 3 for 4 at the plate and Wuerfel was 2 for 3. Myers finished with three RBIs and the win to improve her pitching record to 22-3. Summerville opened the playoffs with a 3-0 win over Lexington Thursday. All three runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Windham was 3 for 3 at the plate and Montei was 2 for 3. Myers was the winning pitcher.
